The Revenue Marine - 1790
The roots of today's Coast Guard were established in 1790 by Alexander Hamilton (that's him on the ten dollar bill). Hamilton proposed the formation of the Revenue Marine, a seagoing military service that would:
* enforce customs and navigation laws
* collect tariffs
* hail in-bound ships
* make inspections
* certify manifests
The Academy Today - 1915
The modern Academy was born in 1915 with the merger of the Life Saving Service and Revenue Cutter Service. In 1932, the citizens of New London donated the present site to the Academy.

To date, 93 international students from 35 countries have graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy; 14 international students are currently enrolled.
The Academy is a fully-resident, military cadet campus. The undergraduate curriculum is heavily oriented toward math, science, and engineering, and leads to a Bachelor of Science degree. Professional training in subjects such as Leadership, Maritime Law, and Navigation are provided throughout the four-year program.
Formal courses are complemented by a variety of summer programs at Coast Guard units, both afloat and ashore. Cadets enjoy seagoing experiences aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Eagle, America's Tall Ship, and other operational Coast Guard cutters.

The cost of instruction for cadets is $71,349 per year. Countries not listed on the World Bank List would be eligible for partial tuition costs of $16,300 annually. This cost is reviewed and revised on an annual basis. In addition to the cost of instruction, all incoming cadets are required to pay an initial deposit of $3,000. This deposit helps offset the cost of a laptop computer, uniforms, and other issued items.
In certain instances, these costs may be waived. Requests for waivers will be considered on a case by case basis and must be sent by message to COMDT COGARD WASHINGTON DC//G-CI//.
