Higher education was implemented in 1969 in Mostaganem, with the creation of the Institute of Agricultural Technology (ITA Mostaganem) which formed the Applied Engineering in Agriculture
1978: Founded the University Center, which opened its doors of higher education in the sciences, biology, common core of medical science.

1997: Merger of the educational infrastructure of the Institute of Agronomy in the University Center.
Since 1998, the University of Mostaganem has grown very fast its infrastructure and capabilities, its staff and its students. The efforts of its leaders, officers and teachers helped the University of Mostaganem successfully cross a series of qualitative steps that have made a real pole Mostaganem University radiating throughout the western region of the country and well beyond.

The University of Mostaganem University currently has 07 sites located throughout the city of Mostaganem. She also has a faculty of 830 permanent academic staff and a population of 28,000 students.
The lessons are taught in traditional courses (31 courses) which are found in about 18,000 students, and LMD courses (10 training areas) which include 10,000 students, divided into cycles and Master License.

Each year, the University of Mostaganem form about 4,000 graduates who are available to socio-economic sectors in the region. The brightest students pursue in the University post-graduate training of Magister and Doctoral degrees in various scientific fields. Thus, more than 150 theses and PhD Theses Magister are supported annually in Mostaganem.
