Kathmandu University - Centre for Buddhist Studies
Kathmandu, Nepal

University description (as per official university website)

Kathmandu University - Centre for Buddhist Studies offers academic programs leading to BA and MA degrees in Buddhist Studies and provides research facilities for international scholars of Buddhism. The Centre is located at the Rangjung Yeshe Institute of Ka-Nying Shedrup Ling Monastery, just a few minutes walk from the Great Stupa of Boudhanath in the midst of thriving Buddhist cultures and traditions.

Founded by Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche, the abbot of Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery as an institution of learning for those wishing to deepen their understanding of Buddhist philosophy and practice, Rangjung Yeshe Institute has conducted seminars and study programs in Nepal for more than twenty years. A hallmark of Rangjung Yeshe Institute has been its ability to combine traditional Buddhist learning with crucial aspects of modern academic scholarship. The faculty of Kathmandu University - Centre for Buddhist Studies is comprised of scholars from both of these traditions, thus constituting a unique environment of learning and expertise.

Venue
Classes are held within the Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery complex, just a few minutes walk from the Great Stupa of Boudhanath in the Kathmandu Valley. Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling is one of Nepal's largest monasteries and houses more than 225 monks and lamas. The abbot of the monastery, Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche, is a well-known Buddhist teacher who often leads seminars on meditation and Buddhist philosophy in Nepal and around the world.

The township of Boudhanath, a community with many Tibetan monasteries, has grown up around the Great Stupa, said to house the relics of the previous Buddha, Kashyapa. The area is home to many revered teachers and a stopping point for many others. It is a major resettlement area for Tibetan Buddhists, and students at the program have ample opportunity to learn about and immerse themselves in the local Tibetan culture

History
The Centre for Buddhist Studies provides people from diverse cultural backgrounds with an environment for cultivating and disseminating Buddhist knowledge through teaching, translation, practice, research, and publication.

Initially founded by Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche as Rangjung Yeshe Institute, an institution of learning for those wishing to deepen their understanding of Buddhist philosophy and practice, the Institute has conducted seminars and study programs in Nepal for more than twenty-five years.

In 2002, in partnership with Kathmandu University, the Centre for Buddhist Studies (CBS) was created to offer long-term programs in Buddhist Studies for academic credit. Currently both a four-year BA degree in Buddhist Studies with Himalayan Languages and a two-year MA degree in Buddhist Studies are offered at CBS.

A hallmark of the Centre for Buddhist Studies has been its ability to combine traditional Buddhist monastic learning with crucial aspects of modern academic scholarship. Accordingly, the faculty of CBS is comprised of scholars from both of these traditions, thus constituting a unique environment of learning and expertise.
