Yunnan University of Nationalities, which was founded on 1St August 1951, was rejuvenated during the reform and opening-up. It is a higher learning institution for all the nationalities of Yunnan and has a glorious history. In the great campaign of “developing the West”, YUN took the lead in reorienting its mission as “consolidating its position in Yunnan, increasing its influence in other provinces of China, and making an impact in the Southeast Asia and South Asia”. School of Mathematics and Computer Science grew out of the Department of Mathematics, which was the earliest science department in YUN. It began to enroll mathematics major undergraduates in July 1978. Computer science and technology major undergraduate has been enrolled ever since 1998. In order to highlight the professional features, it was renamed as Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in April 2000. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science merged with the Teaching Department of Computer Center into School of Mathematics and Computer Science in July 2002. It comprises the School Office, the Teaching and Research Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, the Teaching and Research Department of Computer and Software Engineering, the Teaching and Research Department of Information and Computer Science, the Teaching and Research Department of Computer Fundamentals for College Students, Laboratory Centers, Research Institute of Mathematics and Information Science, Management Institute of Teaching and Research.
The school has strong teaching and research capabilities. It has 3 academic leaders and 4 backbone teachers in Pure Mathematics, which is one of the key disciplines in the University. The Mathematics and Applied mathematics was ranked as one of the first key majors of the university. 6 courses: Mathematical Analysis, Advanced Algebra , Space Analysis Geometry , Mathematical Modeling , Fundamentals of Computers ,belong to the core courses of the University.
In order to improve the teaching quality in undergraduate programs, the school has always attached importance to updating the educational ideas, persisted in educational innovation, strengthened the reformation of the teaching ideas, teaching content, teaching methods and means.

There have been about 3000 students of various categories graduated throughout the nearly 30 years’ construction and development, and they have been making contribution to the economic and social development as well as scientific and technological progress of Yunnan Province.
The institute offers a master program of “Signal & Information Processing” for a four-year program, and there are 21 students currently studying at the institute. In respect of undergraduate course education, the institute offers physics science and electronic information engineering, communication engineering, electric engineering and its automation, and automation four engineering majors each of which is designed for a four-year program, and there are 784 students currently studying at institute. Among them, “Electronic Information Engineering” is one of the key construction and characteristic majors. Undergraduate students are allowed to apply for changing their major within the institute in the second term of their sophomore year and for choosing their majors per category in the second term of their junior year (From year 2008 when students were recruited). Besides, the institute also offers two undergraduate majors which are communication engineering, and electric engineering and automation, and four specialized course majors which are communication network and device, electric engineering automation technology, electronic information engineering technology, and physics education.
37 faculty and staff members are working for the institute. Among them are 6 full professors, 15 associate professors, and absolutely most of the teachers graduated from Chinese famous universities, including 8 doctors and 25 masters.
The institute is set up with four teaching & research sections (Departments) which are “Physics and Applied Physics”, “Communication and Electronic Engineering”, “Electric Automation”, and “Computer Technology”, and they offer nearly 100 fundamental and major courses for this institute, the Institute of Chemistry & Biology, and the Educational Institute.
The school owns better lab teaching conditions equipping with four teaching labs which are “Fundamental Physics Lab”, “Electron & Communication Technology Lab”, “Electric Automation Lab”, and “Computer Application and Network Technology Lab”, undertaking the experimental teaching tasks for the related majors of this institute and the other institutes. The “Key Lab on Wireless Sensor Network Technology of colleges and universities of Yunnan Province” was approved and established in 2007, with open research fund and visiting scholar program, as is especially designed to apply the wireless sensor network technology to the theoretic and applied research on environmental monitoring and protection.
