Founded in Yan’an in 1940, Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) is a national key university, an open, international and research-oriented university of science, engineering and humanities. It is one of the first universities to run a graduate school and receive privileged funding from the central government in the consecutive “Five Year Plan”. BIT is also one of the national “Project 211” universities receiving preferential support from the state. In 2000, BIT was listed in the “985 Project,” which gives priority for development by Commission of Science Technology and Industry for National Defense (COSTIND), Ministry of Education (MOE) and Beijing Municipal Government. In 1999, BIT passed the evaluation for “Outstanding in Undergraduate Program” sponsored by MOE. Under the administration of Ministry of Information and Industry, BIT ranks among the first-class universities for its high education and research performance, strong faculty, and distinctive academic programs. In 2007, BIT got straight A’s in MOE undergraduate program evaluation.

BIT is organized into 17 academic schools and 43 research centers. There also are Graduate School, School of Continuing Education, School of Distance Learning, College of Higher Vocational Studies, Xishan Branch School, Qianhuangdao Branch School, Zhuhai Autonomous College and Liangxiang Campus in BIT around China.

BIT occupies an area of 2,896,114 square meters (including Zhongguancun Campus of 709,021m2, Xishan Laboratory Campus of 167,417 m2, Lixiang Campus of 2,001,000 m2, and Qinhuangdao Branch School of 18676 m2), with a floor space of over 1,100,000 square meters. Plus, Zhuhai Autonomous College in Guangdong covers an area of 3,330,000 square meters. BIT has now become a multi-disciplinary university of engineering, science, management, humanities, economics, law, and pedagogy. While maintaining its great strength in engineering, it pays great attention to the balanced development of all disciplines.

Great strength in Scientific Research

Aiming the target of developing a first-class and world-renowned research oriented university, BIT has created favorable environment for teaching and research. There are over 3500 faculty and staff, including 8 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering Sciences (CAES), 1200 full and associate professors (including researchers and senior engineers), 362 supervisors of doctorate programs, 17 experts with outstanding contributions at the national level, and 55 recipients of special subsidies from the central government. Now BIT has 4 National Key Laboratories, 4 National Key Disciplinary Laboratories, 2 Key Laboratories of Ministry of Education, 4 Beijing Municipal Key Laboratories. Each year BIT undertakes over 700 research projects, the funding for scientific research at BIT has been increasing greatly every year.

Comprehensive Exchange and Communication

BIT is committed to develop international and domestic exchange and cooperation, paying great effort in all kinds of joint programs. It has established collaborative ties with 124 institutions in 42 countries and regions, and conducted joint programs with more than 100 enterprises and institutions worldwide.

Glorious History

BIT has always been a key university enjoying the privileged investment by the central government in different historical periods.

◆In 1940, the predecessor of BIT, Yan’an Academy of Natural Science, was founded.

◆In January1946, Yan’an Academy of Natural Science was renamed as Jin-Cha-Ji Remote Area Industrial College.

◆In October 1948, the Engineering College of North-China University was founded, merging Jin-Cha-Ji Remote Area Industrial College and the Engineering College of Northern University.

◆In November 1951,the Engineering College of North-China University was renamed as Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT).

◆In 1959, BIT was designated as one of the sixteen key universities in China by the central government.

◆In 1984, BIT was authorized as one of the first twenty-two universities to run graduate school on trial.

◆In 1988, BIT changed its Chinese name from "Institute" to "University" with the English name remaining unchanged.

◆In December 1995, BIT was ratified by the central government as one of the "211 Project" universities.

◆In 1996, BIT became one of the first universities to run the graduate school.

◆ In 1999, BIT's undergraduate education was evaluated as "Excellent" in the assessment organized by the Ministry of Education.

◆ In September 2000, BIT was listed on the “985 Project”.

◆ In 2007, BIT got straight A’s in MOE undergraduate program evaluation.
