Facts from history

1992 – The private University “Alma Mater” was established. At that period the lectures were delivered by Akaki Bakradze, Marika Lordkipanidze, Levan Sanikidze, Revaz Mishveladze, Kote Makharadze, Otar Japaridze, Revaz Chogoshvili, Albert Abesadze, Levan Menabde. . .

1994 – American and German professors started delivering lectures in “Alma Mater.”

1995 – The School of Dentistry was established in the University where a new simulating system was introduced first time in Georgia and the laboratory of simulated techniques was established which is unique and has no equal in Georgia.

1995 – By the decision of the Academic Council, the University “Alma Mater” was named Grigol Robakdize University, though society still calls it “Alma Mater”.

1995 – Grigol Robakidze University was included in the catalogue of the world higher educational institutions (among only five higher educational institutions of Georgia).

1996 – The attestation of medical higher educational institutions was held. Grigol Robakidze was among the top ten institutions recognized by the State.

1996 – The University established the university dentistry clinic (first precedent among private institutions).

1998 – The computer programme of dentistry studies was worked out on the Dentistry Department the first time in Georgia (the author’s right 01/3-3-40).

2001 – His Excellency the President of Georgia Mr. Michael Saakashvili (by that time the Minister of Justice) visited the University and met the students and lecturers. The University is proud of his estimation of students and university activities.

2001 – Tempus TACIS project of the European Union started accomplishment at Grigol Robakidze University, which intended reconstructing the teaching and learning system according to the European standard.

2001 – Lecturers of the University were on probation in the universities of England and Sweden within the scope of Tempus TACIS Project. Young specialists having received their education in American and European universities started working at Grigol Robakidze University.

2002 - According to the research of the International Institute of Education Planning Grigol Robakidze University is among the top five higher educational institutions in terms of the employment of graduates.

2002 – The University established the second university dentistry clinic equipped with modern techniques. By the Minister’s order, it is recognized as the state resident base and is given the license for accomplishing the post-diploma education.

2003 – The project of the European Union was competed. As a result of monitoring the University received the grade A. Grigol Robakidse University first time in Georgia completely transformed into the European system of teaching and learning and implemented the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

2003 – The University is involved the international research project of the Economic Forum and Harvard University.

2004 – The University successfully passed the state accreditation with the highest estimation. It 13,6 times exceeds the established standards with all parameters.

2005 – The University received the letter from His Excellency the US President Mr. George Bush in which he expresses his gratitude towards Grigol Robakidze University for publishing the book “Ten Federalist Papers in Georgian” which was presented to him on his visit to Georgia.

2005 – The University received the letter from the Secretary of States Ms Condoleezza Rice in which she greatly appreciates the book “Ten Federalist Papers in Georgian” published by the University and expresses her gratitude towards the Rector and the editors for presenting this book to her on her visit to Georgia.

2006 – The University was awarded the state accreditation for the second time. It got the highest quota of the contingent among the private institutions.

2006 - The Government of Georgia discussed “the outcomes of the state certification and the unified post-diploma qualification exams”. It was ascertained that according to the level of preparing dentists, Grigol Robakidze University occupies the first rating place among the state and private higher educational institutions of Georgia.

2006 – The Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia published the publication of Alexander von Humboldt fund (Germany) where is indicated that Grigol Robakidze University is listed in the World List of Universities (the World University Catalogue) and is recognized in Germany.

Development of the University

GRIGOL ROBAKIDZE UNIVERSITY was founded the year after the act concerning the establishment of private, higher educational institutions was introduced.

The founders of the University spent a whole year studying the higher educational systems and pedagogical technologies of the civilized countries of the world. This gave them a firm basis to form a western model of leaning and teaching which conditioned the future success of the University.

The University carried out marketing research very thoroughly, in order to detect what other, new specialities needed to be established.

Today Grigol Robakidze University is one of the famous and prestigious universities. Its reputation is determined first of all by its rich teaching resource - material-technical base which is still unique and has no equal in Georgia, also by those newest teaching and learning technologies, which fully match with the European standards.

About 150 professors and lecturers work at the University. Over 800 students study happily and successfully. Many American, English and German specialists deliver lectures and carry out research together with students. Every year students participate in scientific conferences, TV journalist students make presentations, win in Georgian and international festivals, etc.

The achieved success of the University is confirmed by the fact that according to the research of the UNESCO International Institute of Education Planning (June 2002) demand on the specialists prepared by Grigol Robakidze University on the labour market reached 86 percent and with this index it appeared among the top five educational institutions.

The involvement of Grigol Robakidze University in the Tempus TACIS Project, besides other projects,
should be considered as of great importance, which has enabled the University to standards of teaching and learning in a very short time. For the first time in Georgia the European credit
transfer system (ECTS), interactive educational technologies, the system of teachers' permanent
development and the academic quality assurance system were implemented within this University. Academic programmes using modules were made up namely here for the first time in Georgia. (It is remarkable that the this system was introduced into the higher educational sphere according to the new legislation only in 2005). Nottingham Trent University (United Kingdom) and Lund University (Sweden) were the partners of Grigol Robakidze University within the sphere of this project.

Successful development of the project laid the foundation for deepening the international relations of Grigol Robakidze University. In 2002 Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between Nottingham Trent University and Grigol Robakidze University, which became the source of students' exchange programme. The coordinator of this memorandum from the Georgian side is Professor Manana Rusieshvili and from Nottingham Trent University Professor Trevor Cartledge who at the same time is the Honorary Professor of Grigol Robakidze University.

Grigol Robakidze University highly appreciates the partnership with Nottingham Trent University and Lund University and expresses its gratitude towards Mr. Colin Love - Director of the project, the coordinator Professor Manana Rusieshvli, and the members of the project: Dr. Trevor Cartledge, Ms. Jackie Stephens, Mr. Jan Hellberg.

The estimations made by the President Mr. Michael Saakashvili, the US President Mr. George Bush, his wife Mrs. Laura Bush, and the Secretary of States Ms Condoleezza Rice about the activities of the University must be considered as a historical event. It is not only an honour for Grigol Robakidze University, its academic personnel and students, but also a great responsibility and stimulus for their future activities.
