Royal University for Women
West Riffa, Bahrain
University description (as per official university website)
A women's university? What's that all about? Short answer – it's about preparing women to face their futures as strong, confident, full-partner participants.
Over the years, studies have been conducted to determine the advantages of attending women's universities. These studies have found that women who attend single-sex universities:
participate more fully in and out of class.
score higher on standardized achievement tests.
have more opportunities to hold leadership positions while at university, and are able to observe women functioning in top jobs (as 90 percent of the presidents and 55 percent of the faculty are women at women’s universities).
develop measurably higher levels of self-esteem than women in co-educational institutions. In fact, after two years in co-educational institutions, women have been shown to have lower levels of self-esteem than when they entered university.
are more likely to complete their studies and graduate from university.
are three times more likely to earn a baccalaureate degree in economics; are one and a half times more likely to earn baccalaureate degrees in life sciences and physical sciences than at a co-educational institution; and, continue toward doctorates in math, science and engineering in disproportionately large numbers.
are more successful in their careers; that is, they tend to hold higher positions, are happier, and earn more money.
To offer our students a rewarding and challenging multi-cultural learning environment that cultivates strong, well-rounded personalities, encourages leadership, and builds character, social consciousness and community. To realize our commitment to teaching, learning, research and service through the activities of all members of the University community.
The Royal University for Women will become the regional leader in academic excellence for women. Programmes and practices that meet international standards will prepare our graduates to become leaders who are engaged members of their society, demonstrating initiative and life-long habits of learning and individual development. The RUW graduate will be creative, confident and forward thinking.
