Universidad Gerardo Barrios (UGB) was founded p or men and women entrepreneurs, who became partners and formed STARTING (Business Education Migueleña SA) Headquarters building of the University on December 5, 1981, which was located in the in wer Installations the birthplace of Juan Jose Canas, composer of the anthem of El Salvador, in the fourth Street West in downtown San Miguel, established with the motto "Towards a Vocational Training, Human Head and updated ", I n 1982, started n its activities with four schools and eight runs, two Engineers, four degrees and three teachers. In 1988, the first computers were purchased, at which time the war had greatly affected the Eastern Region, many young people emigrated, transport was risky and poverty deepened, the University made many efforts to preserve and increase their population, graduating 342 professionals, which gave great impetus to the region. At the end of this period was the dream of owning their own campus and outlined the strategy to achieve it in the first five years of the next period of time.

1991 - 2000: During this decade the University has consolidated, it created the Bachelor of Computer Career and Technical Analysis and Computer Programming and in subsequent years, the Bachelor in Marketing and Public Accounts. In 1993 , it acquired a building for the construction of the campus in Usulutan, and in 1994 , acquired the land for the campus of San Miguel, always with the concept of respect and enhance the environment.

In 2002 we built a new computer lab and an office building for student services. Because of the multiple relationships with agencies, institutions, media companies and both domestic and foreign, in addition to the community that the institution had, it becomes urgent to have an agency that handles the conventions, all sorts of alliances and cooperation as well as disclosure of relevant University was established as the Unit for Promotion and Public Relations.

Ends the year 2006 with two major activities, the celebration of the anniversary of our First Quarter Century and 1st. Graduation MBA of International Trade. In 2007 there were major events in the UGB to confirm their recognition and prestige, both nationally and internationally, in the month of February, received four awards in the City of Los Angeles, California: The first by the newspaper Day by Day ( Excellence in Education 2006), the second by the City of Los Angeles (Professional Excellence in Central America), the third by the State of California (Excellence in Education 2006) and the fourth by the Mayor of Los Angeles (Excellence in Education 2006) .

In 2009, the Rector of the UGB, received by the Ministry of Education (MOE) a recognition by the high commitment that the institution provides Salvadoran society in educational development in the country, which contributes to the National Education Plan 2021, established by the MOE.

The UGB, as an institution committed to the communities, supporting them in different activities, among which include: the celebration of Family Day in San Antonio Asylum and House of Mercy of the city of San Miguel, Children's Day, Etc.

In academics, culture and sport, the UGB has again highlighted regional, national and internationally, as it has participated in various events that can lift up the name of the UGB and the representation that makes each of our students in them, is pride for the institution.
