History of the Universidad Francisco Gavidia.
Francisco Gavidia University is located in Alameda Roosevelt 3031, San Salvador, and the name was given in honor of the great humanist Salvadoran Francisco Gavidia, who was a writer, educator, historian and journalist, El Salvador, was born on December 29, 1863 and died 22 September 1955. Francisco Gavidia practiced all genres and all provided a rich vision of reality. Gavidia has some depth not found in writers before him or his contemporaries. Alexandrian discovered taught French and Rubén Darío (Nicaragua), who joined the verse written in Spanish and took it to its logical conclusion. His spirit took him to form all walks of literature, as some claim that his work is somewhat scattered. Their diversity is no fragmentation of wealth: it is a whole that shows the dedication of a man concerned to substantiate a Salvadoran cultural expression. We studied pre-Columbian and colonial past of the country in its context as well as Central America. Aside from her poetry, participated in journalistic and literary activities and worried about education; published numerous essays on educational aspect, in 1932 was declared "Salvadoran meritorious" by the legislature.
Universidad Francisco Gavidia (UFG) was founded on March 7, 1981, beginning his academic activities in June of that year, with an initial enrollment of 534 students. The history of the institution has not only written, but is reflected in his physical work in his academic career in research contribution in their contribution to society as part of its social, and commitment to population sectors needy. Institutional route covers more than 27 years of service to the country with the greatest purpose: the formation of human capital needed to meet the challenges demanded by the economic and social development in a competitive environment whose horizons are determined by advances contemporary science and technology.
In the period between 1981 and 1989, growth in student recruitment was rather moderate, because in the first nine years of existence, from an initial enrollment of 534 students in 1981 had increased to 1.400 in late 1989 and over of 2.500 in 1990.
The year 1990 marks the beginning of a new era for the university, as events of significance occurred affecting the institutional life of the UFG, due to administrative changes that occurred on March 27, 1990, where there was choice of new authorities, thus made a significant shift in the history of the institution. In front of the new authorities, was elected Mr. Mario Antonio Ruiz Ramirez, a lot of professional and academic university career, who took the lead in transforming the UFG in a premier institution, both locally and in the region. The dynamism, vision, entrepreneurship and competitiveness of people who take charge of the direction of the University in the second period, introduce a different way of educational administration, so that 1990 is the milestone that marks the transition from the first period for a second term, which until now has been considered the most successful of the life of the institution.
Since 1990, the UFG ensures its stability and academic recognition of all sectors of society, and in 1992 , establishing the Western Regional Center (CRO) in the city of Santa Ana also in that year, was created Office of Special Projects and International Cooperation whose main activity was aimed at the provision of services in the areas of training, research and educational evaluation and later in 1996 this was renamed Office of Research and Development Center (CIDE), with a more comprehensive and more effective technical resources to meet the demand for private and state agencies, especially the Ministry of Education projects financed with funds from USAID, IDB, IBRD and UNDP. In this period we did important work for the Ministry of Education in the context of educational reform, as several investigations were conducted nationwide educational needs and assessed the CAPS program for teachers, who obtained a degree of specialization in education at primary institutions in the United States.
On 9 February 1996, at Headquarters held a historic event of great importance to the institution after almost 15 years after its foundation was inaugurated the new campus of the University. The campus was designed and built with educational standards and consists of three buildings of four and five floors for classrooms, one for library, one for coffee and an auditorium with 250 seats, these facilities were put at the service of the university community from January 1996. Buildings used for teaching and learning in addition to adequate space, ventilation, orientation and lighting in each classroom have a sound system and equipped with a fiber optic connection for Internet access as an aid to learning.
In 1997 the University made a qualitative leap in the use of technology, when it acquired a Node Computers with direct Internet connection, which has ser1vido and continues to serve as a valuable technological resource to support the teaching-learning process, in that Thereafter, this medium was considered a breakthrough teaching in higher education teaching in Central America.
The speed and connectivity to the Internet, has been gradually increased, and currently has a bandwidth of 16 Mbps
In the area of specialization and to improve the quality of a group of professors from the university, academic agreement with the University of Louisville, Kentucky United States, between 1997 and 1998, were held two masters degrees from the University facilities : the first in Business Administration (MBA) and the second in Education (MEd). The graduate degrees were awarded by the University of Louisville. In total, this program of academic cooperation, 25 professors from the University obtained his master's degree.
In the new millennium, among the first events is that in 2002 was put at the service of higher education on Channel 99 of UFG-TV, which airs on cable and was intended to serve as reinforcement of program content the courses of the careers that are offered, the educational channel programming that has been evolving and have joined different programs of interest to the University community.
In the same year 2002, in April, it opened the Center for Public Opinion (COP) has made important contributions and forecasts around issues of national interest. 2002 was also prolific in publications, Publishers UFG court issued various literary works and of interest to students.
In July 2003 it opened a new campus building, whose construction was initiated on December 5, 2001. The building called Eble (Library and Laboratory Building Specialized) houses a modern library and Specialty Laboratories Electronic Engineers (FACET), Networking, Antennas, analog and digital telecommunications, Microwave, Phone, Language Laboratory with use of the Rosetta Stone software , the Hall of Architecture Digital and 9 modern datacenter. The Eble is equipped with wireless Internet and works with sensors that optimize the use of air conditioning and lighting.
In 2003 the University began offering courses through the Virtual U-platform, to be in tune with new trends in education in virtual mode, but the most significant event occurred in the second week of December this year, obtained certification with the International Standard ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System Quality, in which he had been working since 2001. This impacts all administrative and academic system of the University, because as a result, specific procedures were created for corporate functions, and each process is part of a philosophy of continuous improvement in quality policies, prepared for school.
Within this framework, in January 2004, the first school year, is implemented curricular reform in the 19 races offered by the University in that year, special arrangements are introduced in the teaching-learning process. Curricular reform includes thirteen common subjects are the basis for the specialized area in each race: English Language I-IV, Information Technology and Communications of the I to IV of the Information Society, Mathematical Logic, Philosophy Quality, Writing and Spelling, and General Culture. It kicks off the Masters of Applied Computer Networks and Software Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. These post-graduate specialties are considered necessary to cope with the technological advances of the time, the globalization trend of the economy and the expansion of communications.
In February 2004 firms LATU Systems Uruguay and ÖQS of Austria made the formal delivery of the document containing the ISO 9001:2000 certification to the Francisco Gavidia University and the Regional Center West.
The processes are certified at the University Teaching-Learning Process (SAP) and SAP support processes.
Under the commitment to maintain, sustain and promote continual improvement towards institutional academic excellence, 29 July 2004, the Universidad Francisco Gaviria received the category of "Accredited Institution" by the Commission on Accreditation of Quality Higher Education (GC) under the Ministry of Education, also in that same year won the renewal of institutional accreditation from the Association of Private Universities of Central America (AUPRICA). These awards have become the immediate response to the various activities carried out both inside and outside the institution.
On 16 August 2004, the University acquired the licensing rights to use the EBSCO database, for use by students and teachers as bibliographic support the teaching-learning process. EBSCO Database, is considered one of the academic database more complete.
On 18 October 2004, the University takes another step of quality, strengthen its academic leadership position in technology, to connect to the Internet Advanced Network (Internet 2), through an agreement with Florida International University (FIU ) of the United States of America. The Internet2 network is the exclusive network for scientists and researchers from universities and research institutes around the world. On 5 December the same year, opens the UFG Radio On Line, which is transmitted through the Internet 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. UFG Radio, is an alternative way of contacting the student population and then to the public in the world, can be tuned in cyberspace.
In March 2006, the University celebrated its twenty-five years of existence, for which various commemorative events were held throughout the year. An act that stands out is the nomination of 59 Avenue South, as Avenida Francisco Gavidia. This management was delivered to the City Council of the Municipality of San Salvador. It is worth mentioning that this nomination coincided with the extension of this avenue, by the Ministry of Public Works. Another event that stands out is the opening of the Student Cultural Center, which houses the Office of Student Development, which depend on the Cultural Extension Unit, the Sports and the Student Counselling Unit. Additionally, this center operates Gavidia Francisco Museum as a tribute to the illustrious humanist who gives the name to the University.
As a result of continuous improvement, the University received in December 2006, the Re-certification of its Quality Management System ISO 9001:2000, for three years.
In the area of continuing education training, from the year 2006, the institution through the Center for Continuing Education and Professional Development, has strengthened and systematized its course offerings and graduate students, led to specialization and updating of professionals, students and general public.
UFG has been a landmark on the issue of quality, offering open courses in the training of Internal Auditors of Quality under ISO 9001:2000, which have trained more than 150 people from different industrial, commercial and service. The University has also ventured into the field of counseling and consulting firms in the area of implementation of Quality Management Systems based on ISO 9001:2000, starting this service with the University of San Pedro Sula in Honduras.
The year 2006 to date, the academic offerings of the University has been updated and diversified into specialist areas of knowledge, which distinguish the institution from other national and regional HEIs. In July 2007 marked the beginning of the Ph.D. in Economics, taught an agreement with the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California (UABC).
Beginning in 2006, institutional research and social outreach have taken a new turn with the creation of the Research and the Department of Social Projection. In the case of the investigation, hired a first-rate researcher who directs the research team responsible for implementing institutional research projects, focused on applied research and research and technological innovation. In the case of social projection, it has been redirected toward integrating teaching and research findings for application in public and private organizations and civil society in El Salvador.
In September 2007, the University redesigned its Institutional Strategic Plan 2007-2012, which contains new goals and targets that respond to changes and requirements of national and regional environment.
In the same year 2007, created the Office of Graduate and Continuing Education, in order to strengthen the graduate and continuing education. This has given new impetus to the graduate courses and continuing education and in turn, has expanded the range of graduate careers.
In 2008, under the context of the new Strategic Plan has made a thorough review of curricula of most undergraduate programs, with the purpose of updating those plans to the demands of the environment.
In the same year the University has promoted continuous improvement projects aimed at improving the quality of teaching-learning process and support processes that process. Some of these improvement projects are:
a.) Provision of laptop computers to all teachers in the UFG
b.) Expansion of the campus, with the acquisition of the facilities of the Giant Shopping Center, located on Olympic Avenue and an area of 12, 425.21 m2.
c.) Enabling wireless Internet connectivity throughout the campus.
d.) Establishment of the UFG University Radio 105.3 FM
e) Creation of Channel 15 Television airwaves
f) Issuance of Credit Card UFG University for the benefit of students and other members of the institution.
In 2009, we obtained the 2009-2014 Institutional Reaccreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of the Ministry of Education. For which the institution was visited Reaccreditation Peer Reviewers, on 6, 7 and 8 May.
The UFG launched in early 2009, the Program Quality Assurance (ACP), in order to provide greater access to higher education level, and give students the opportunity to ensure their university studies and complement the process training supported by technological tools custom art (Laptop). For the first three hundred students enrolled in this program have been provided with a laptop computer, to support their learning process.
In the month of May 2009, the Research Fund for Higher Education (FIES) of the Ministry of Education, the UFG awarded funding for implementing the Project "Creation and Implementation of a Business Incubator and Information Technology Communication ", with which the University is implementing a Business Incubator based curriculum that will benefit students and professionals in general is geared to entrepreneurship and also serve as a source of employment generation technology.
For this project, the University has technical support from the Business Incubator INGENIO belonging to the Technological Laboratory of Uruguay (LATU).
In the past eight years, have signed many agreements with national and international institutions, making it possible to strengthen the academic and professional practices of university students, taking advantage of the benefits of linking the university with the private sector and with agencies state.
With these cooperative efforts, he responds to the requirements of human capital formation are demanding companies in the sectors of industry and services.
The institution since its founding, has been consolidating his true identity and mission as a leading institution in higher education, improving its educational offerings, providing students with a better course of study, selecting and preparing the best teachers, continuously improving technological resources to support teaching and learning process, so that now the university is positioned as an accredited and certified as to their academic quality, gaining acceptance and credibility of Salvadoran society, and having a Central-level recognition.
This forces the UFG stay on the right path towards academic excellence through continuous improvement.
