La Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja was founded by the Marist Association of Ecuador (AME) on May 3, 1971 and officially recognized by the Ecuadorian State under the Executive Decree 646, published in the Official Gazette Issue 217 May 5, 1971, with which it is constituted as an autonomous legal entity under the agreement "Modus Vivendi" concluded between the Vatican and Ecuador, considering the rules of the Church in its organization and gobierno.Posteriormente, in October 1997, the Diocese of Loja transferred indefinitely, the "Association ID Cristo Redentor, Identes Missionaries" , the leadership and direction of the university.
Constitutively, the Technical University of Loja is a private institution, non-profit and co-financed by the Ecuadorian state. Higher Education provides undergraduate and graduate levels through study modes: On, Open and distance learning, and its variants: A traditional distance and Virtual Blended in four areas of knowledge: the Technical, Socio-Humanistic, Biological Area Administrative Area.

SOME MILESTONES IN THE HISTORY OF UTPL
In 1976 UTPL launches first Latin American mode of distance education , which begins with the career of Educational Sciences, opening the possibility of access to higher education to all people, from anywhere in the Republic of Ecuador.
Currently has 93 university centers, 90 in the country and 3 overseas.

The participation of faculty, staff and students is guaranteed in the various spaces for each one of them. The educational model focuses on UTPL " Production Management ", where the student and the teacher are related to real projects within CITTES .
Production management is an essential part in vocational training, translates the spirit of service leadership and concrete achievements, in which teachers and students are agents of social development.
The CITTES mark the path of the university to new achievements, along with university management based on pluralism, solidarity, ethics, tolerance of diversity and academic excellence. This is what we call UTPL "City of Love", which refers to the university in an atmosphere of spirit and values.
In the research context of CITTES as well as in projects of service to society, the students involved in the productive part of interdisciplinary teams and lead to real projects.
The role of schools is teaching under a model of seminar-style class, where students must check in advance the basic background information and allowing him to understand the issues addressed in the classroom.
This is compounded by the teacher's role as facilitator of knowledge and its directors, in terms of curriculum management, which gives broad powers to carry out its mission. The teacher researchers 'reside' in the CITTES and taught at various schools in their areas of specialty.
Virtual Learning Environment (EVA) , Videoconferencing System, Internet and email management are supports for our academic, administrative and research. Each semester, 541 faculty lead the learning process - learning in a context of constant renewal and training.
By 2006, 78% of teachers working full-time researchers in the Research, Technology Transfer, Extension and Services (CITTES) and 23 schools. In the "road to good science," the UTPL has placed special emphasis on the fourth level of training of their teachers, frontline universities worldwide. Over 218 teachers are doctoral researchers in various fields of knowledge, universities recognized German, Italian, Spanish, American and Mexican. They also form part of regional, national and international cooperation and academic exchange. These activities allow Loja put one of the cities with the highest concentration of PhDs in Latin America in relation to its population.
In short, the academic life of UTPL combines the dimensions of the university: CITTES, schools and careers in Classic mode and distance and service to society with a high sense humanistic. These dimensions are in constant interaction resulting in formation of the student, who during his tenure at the University developing a life plan, and scientific spirit of service and peer leadership.
