The Escuela Superior Polit�cnica del Litoral (ESPOL) was founded as a response to the growing demands for scientific and technical education in the coastal region. It was created during the presidency of Dr. Camilo Ponce Enr�quez, through Executive Decree N� 1664 published in the Official Register on November 11th, 1958. On May 25th 1959, in two classrooms of the Casona Universitaria 51 students officially began academic courses in ESPOL under the direction of the first Rector, Engineer Walter Camacho Navarro.
ESPOL is a public non-profit making institution of higher education, autonomous in matters academic, scientific, technical, administrative, financial and economic, with the capacity to self-regulate, search for the truth and formulate proposals for human development, within the restrictions outlined in the country's Constitution and laws.

The academic and investigative activities are carried out on six campuses: Gustavo Galindo, Las Pe�as, CENAIM, Santa Elena, Daule and Samborond�n.
The Gustavo Galindo campus has an area of 724 hectares and is located at Km 30.5 v�a Perimetral. It is home to the central administration and to the majority of the under-graduate degrees that ESPOL offers. Its modern infrastructure is a result of the Development Plan 1983-1992 which was financed by the BID-ESPOL II loan.
The Las Pe�as campus has an area of 2.5 hectares and is located next to the oldest neighbourhood in the city. The campus has a wide and diverse academic life including bothunder-graduate and post-graduate studies as well as courses for professional development.
CENAIM is located in San Pedro de Manglaralto on the Ruta del Sol on the Santa Elena peninsula. Its main task is to boost the productive capacity of the Ecuadorian fishing sector and to be an internationally-recognized academic campus in this field.
The Santa Elena campus is located in the capital of the canton of the same name and offers degrees related to fishing and computer technology.
The Daule campus is located 46km to the north of Guayaquil and is dedicated to agriculture, training bachelors and technicians and working closely with the productive sector, specifically the rice-growing sector.
The Samborond�n campus is located at the entrance to the canton of the same name and offers degrees in Executive Secretarial Studies and Systems Programming.

Every year ESPOL celebrates its anniversary with events and the presentation of projects and initiatives.
In 2004 ESPOL organized the 1st Project Fair "Links to the Community" from October 22nd - 24th at the MAAC esplanade on the Malecon 2000 riverside development. Furthermore, there were events and conferences at the different ESPOL campuses. (Program of Activities).
