ESPOL
Guayaquil, Ecuador

University description (as per official university website)

The Escuela Superior Politcnica del Litoral (ESPOL) was founded as a response to the growing demands for scientific and technical education in the coastal region. It was created during the presidency of Dr. Camilo Ponce Enrquez, through Executive Decree N 1664 published in the Official Register on November 11th, 1958. On May 25th 1959, in two classrooms of the Casona Universitaria 51 students officially began academic courses in ESPOL under the direction of the first Rector, Engineer Walter Camacho Navarro.

ESPOL is a public non-profit making institution of higher education, autonomous in matters academic, scientific, technical, administrative, financial and economic, with the capacity to self-regulate, search for the truth and formulate proposals for human development, within the restrictions outlined in the country's Constitution and laws.

In March 2002, the ESPOL population was the following:

The academic and investigative activities are carried out on six campuses: Gustavo Galindo, Las Peas, CENAIM, Santa Elena, Daule and Samborondn.

The Gustavo Galindo campus has an area of 724 hectares and is located at Km 30.5 va Perimetral. It is home to the central administration and to the majority of the under-graduate degrees that ESPOL offers. Its modern infrastructure is a result of the Development Plan 1983-1992 which was financed by the BID-ESPOL II loan.

The Las Peas campus has an area of 2.5 hectares and is located next to the oldest neighbourhood in the city. The campus has a wide and diverse academic life including bothunder-graduate and post-graduate studies as well as courses for professional development.

CENAIM is located in San Pedro de Manglaralto on the Ruta del Sol on the Santa Elena peninsula. Its main task is to boost the productive capacity of the Ecuadorian fishing sector and to be an internationally-recognized academic campus in this field.

The Santa Elena campus is located in the capital of the canton of the same name and offers degrees related to fishing and computer technology.

The Daule campus is located 46km to the north of Guayaquil and is dedicated to agriculture, training bachelors and technicians and working closely with the productive sector, specifically the rice-growing sector.

The Samborondn campus is located at the entrance to the canton of the same name and offers degrees in Executive Secretarial Studies and Systems Programming.
