Century of the splendid Renaissance and the birth of printing and the discovery of America.

Fr Thomas Ortiz, who is first walked our earth today in Colombia in December of 1528, and just ten years Friar Domingo de las Casas, Bartolomé cousin, would be celebrating the first Mass of the founding of Bogotá on August 6 of 1538 on the anniversary of the death of Santo Domingo de Guzmán.

The own capital city founder, Don Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada donated to the Dominicans their books that would be born in 1573 the first educational institution and is in 1580 that Pope Gregory XIII, by the Bull "Romanus Pontifex" under the title and sponsorship of Santo Tomás de Aquino confirmed the foundation of the first university in the New Kingdom of Granada, located in the Dominican Convent next to the Central Plaza of Santa Fe.

Born then the First Senate of Colombia, the Universidad Santo Tomas and, of course, within the academic offerings of that time, there are studies of law, or what others are called "the Law School or the New Court Kingdom of Granada ", philosophy, art and theology, among others.

On July 19, when the clock of history point to the arrival of midnight, she will shine with unfading glory of the immortal opening minutes of the two hundred years of our national independence and will instantly start of the year bicentennial celebration of our freedom , whose Declaration of Independence, signed on the afternoon of Friday July 20, 1810, stamped with his first lines in the signature of the Rector of the University of St. Thomas, fr. The first of these is the Dominican, of the same lineage that founded and still runs our university, a noble son of Domingo de Guzman, who decided to raise the banner of protest against the unjust enslavement of our people: Brother Ciriaco Archer, born in Simacota, Santander in 1724, whose verses known as the "Certificate of the People" speak for the first time of independence in our land, in the popular revolution of the Communards.

Two centuries after its foundation, our university as first University Senate of Colombia, had already begun their journey of promoting freedom is the only chance of giving the natives the weapons of knowledge and science to build a glorious future of free and sovereign people .

In their classrooms who arrive later will be recognized as genuine advocates and fighters for the freedom of his people. There is a record that requires many Tomasinos graduated during the forty years prior to the deed of Independence: the "Book of Tips", ordered by the then Rector Fray Antonio Cabrejo, OP and is located in the National Library, security room 145, it is found that between 1768 and 1808, our university bachelor's degrees conferred 1264, 390, Degree, 397 PhD and 29 Master.
