Legal nature:

The National Open University and Distance (UNAD) is an autonomous body at the national university, with a special regime, whose main purpose is to open and distance education, linked to the Ministry of National Education as a policy and planning in the education sector concerns .

Contributing to education for all through open and distance mode through research, pedagogical, social outreach and educational and methodological innovations with the use of information technology and communications, to promote and accompany autonomous learning, culture and generating entrepreneurship in the context of global society and knowledge conducive to economic development, social and human development of local, regional and global quality, efficiency and social equity.

Is projected as a leader in Open and Distance Education, recognized nationally and internationally for the innovative quality and relevance of its educational offerings and services and for their commitment and contribution of its academic community to sustainable human development, local communities and global

Due to its nature, its mission and special arrangements, the National Open University and Distance (UNAD) is an autonomous academic body corporate, administrative and financial independent assets, with capacity to govern themselves, appoint their own officers, develop and manage its budget in accordance with the functions that correspond to and make its rules and regulations under current legislation.


1. General principles contained in the Constitution and the Law:
The university work will serve the public interest and education for all, based on equality, morality, efficiency, economy, speed, fairness, democratic participation, transparency and social equity.

University action be guided by the values of coexistence, respect for human dignity and differences, solidarity extended, cultural pluralism, ethnic diversity, academic coherence to build a culture of peace, and other principles which form the basis of unity and national identity and universal.

2. For its special character, nature and mission, the National Open University and Distance (UNAD) is governed by the following specific principles:
Self understood as socially responsible and ethical exercise of university autonomy to achieve their missionary responsibilities within the knowledge society.

Academic freedom relating to teaching, learning and research as pillars of its substantive responsibilities integrators.
Autonomous learning self-centered training, using teaching, appropriate and intensive use of information technology and communication.

Academic excellence related to the relevance, quality and equity of training provided, as essential elements of university life, depending on the sustainable development of the student, local, regional and global. Democratization understood as a commitment to access and sustainability of training, performance of its actors and estates, organizational management and globalization of knowledge.

Vital public project. The various training activities, research and social outreach specific to the organization, will be based on the public nature of higher education to enhance the geographic and population coverage, quality and social equity in different educational settings and contexts cultural, within the framework of regional cooperation and exchange, national and global.

Comprehensive training. The institution will offer training on a comprehensive scientific, ethical and humanistic in the framework of the knowledge society that will generate powers in line with the educational processes, leading to social consciousness and contribute to building a caring society , just and free.

Distance education mode. To fulfill its substantive responsibilities, the university will facilitate the use of information technologies and communication in educational models, appropriate to the characteristics of open and distance education.

Ecological Ethics. The institution will encourage social and economic heritage conservation, environmental and cultural regions, with a clean and competitive production that contributes to the sustainability of future generations.

Objectives: The objectives missionary, the following:
Open and ongoing education . Develop policies, plans, projects, strategies and actions of permanent open education, to facilitate the design and implementation of adult education programs at all levels and stages of education, job skills, community development and care of vulnerable populations through intensive use of information technology and communication.

Research and development. promote the research culture and entrepreneurship, for the design and development of social innovation processes, technological, and scientific production, which contribute to solutions in line with the needs and possibilities of different regional and cultural contexts.

Academic networks . Promote the building of networks supported technologies, to strengthen the academic communities of teachers, tutors, students and alumni, to promote the principles and practices of identity UNAD, and generate new partnerships, coexistence and community involvement.

Leadership in open and distance education. To promote policies for sustainable development and the mode of open and distance learning, the use of telematics and virtual technologies in the context of the knowledge society at local, regional, national and global.
Holistic sustainability. Design alternatives for the diversification of funding sources through the provision of programs, services, consulting, consultancy and special projects that promote the management of the university and contribute to its social impact and financial sustainability.

Historical Review

The National Open University and Distance (UNAD) is an educational project that was born with the name of University Drive South of Bogota, UNISUR during the government of Belisario Betancur C. Doctor, Law 52 of 1981 as a public order under the Ministry of National Education and transformed by the Congress through Law 396 of August 5, 1997 in the National Open University and Distance UNAD, in order to design and implement academic programs with the teaching strategy of education remotely relevant to local needs, regional, national and international, in line with the challenges and demands of a democratic, participatory and dynamic scientific models, social and cultural factors that contextualize the XXI century.

Since its launch - April 1982 - the University has been known for its commitment to the communities, populations that have not had access to technical training, humanities and community partner, and their contribution to the recovery of the social fabric , generation of employment and training spaces for the decision and citizen participation.

On 22 December 2005 by Resolution 6215 of the Ministry of Education, the UNAD was legally recognized with the University's academic status, prior compliance with the conditions laid down normally.

The National Open University and Distance (UNAD) by Decree 2770 of 2006 is recognized as a national public body with legal personality, autonomy, academic, administrative and financial independent assets under the Ministry of Education.

In 2007 he conducted the planning exercise for the design of the development plan from 2007 to 2011, "for educational quality and social equity"

In 2009 the University received their certificates of quality in the Colombian Technical Standard NTCGP 1000 Public Management and Technical Standard NTC Quality ISO 9001. And by Resolution No. 64329 of December 14, 2009 the Division of distinctive signs of the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce granted the UNAD the deposit of trade shows (logo UNAD)
