History

St. Bonaventure University is a private institution, which exercises its purposes under the constitutional guarantee of university autonomy, academic freedom, learning, research and teach, in attitudes of respect, compliance with the Act and the provisions concordat established between the Holy See and the Colombian government. Foundation is a nonprofit, managed since its inception by the Franciscan Province of Santa Fe de Colombia, and that through the training activity contributes to the promotion and development of Colombian education ", since its inception and subsequent restoration.

It was founded by the Franciscan community as a College of Higher Studies in 1708, in Bogotá. Began work under the direction of the Franciscan Friar Diego Barroso and was approved by the Royal Decree of Fernando VI, September 19, 1747. Despite the obvious contribution of the Franciscans to the formation of the youth of the country, November 5, 1861 was closed the old Colegio Mayor de San Buenaventura in order of Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera, who ordered the suppression of religious communities throughout the country. But in 1959 the Minister Provincial, Fr José Miguel López, Darío Correa commissioned Fray Gomez to process before the Colombian Association of Universities restoration, a fact that was achieved on 14 June 1961.

Through Decree 1729 of 30 August 1973 the National Executive, the name was changed to: University of San Buenaventura. University retains its status as provided by Article 19 of Act 30 of 1992. Develops its institutional objective under the provisions of Article 68 of the Charter of 1991. Was recognized as a legal non-profit by Resolution 1326 of March 25, 1975, issued by the Ministry of National Education, under the decrees 125 and 1277 of 1973.

Since then the University has been growing steadily, has consolidated its reputation untarnished education and has extended its activity to three major Colombian cities where it has opened sectional: Medellín (1966), Cali (1970) and Cartagena (1994). Bogotá headquarters, meanwhile, besides consolidating their traditional and Faculties of Philosophy, Theology and Education, in recent decades has been moving into its new programs, current technology and responding to the needs of national development, have become vanguards of the development of Colombian higher education.

Mission

As a University, "considers essential in its action, the constant search for truth, creative activity, the serious and objective analysis of reality, the scientific rigor and the intrinsic value of science and research, critical examination of knowledge and their application to community development. Performs the functions of teaching, research, outreach and institutional well-being infused into these functions the ethical, aesthetic, social and religious, and assumed to be fundamental issues of university: the autonomy of knowledge, the corporate, research, creation and the transformation of society through knowledge.
