University of Medellín
Medellin, Colombia

University description (as per official university website)

“Los Alpes” is a sector of Belén, a neighborhood located on the southwest of the City of Medellín. Through narrow streets, you have access to the Universidad de Medellín, which pleasantly impresses the newcomer, both for the harmony of its architecture and by the charming green and woody contour which surrounds the buildings.

The campus, with 54.505 square meters, built on a total surface of 370.000 square meters, offers a physical and service structure which facilitates the execution of the educational proposal dreamed by the Founders and adapted to the needs of the academic community.

In the university campus, the functionality of the buildings devoted to teaching; the efficacy of the services of the Computer Teaching Center; the slenderness of the administrative building; the location of the library on the center of the campus; the strength of the theater; the ambition of the Television Production Center; the modern conception of the coliseum; the versatility of the sports zone; the friendly Alumni House; the majesty of the Laboratory Center, and the beautiful encounter places stand out, and are all at the service of the large university family and the community. This generous layout has converted the Universidad de Medellín in a habitual headquarter for the cultural activities of the city.

In this scenario, the original vision conceived fifty-seven years ago, is incarnated in the responsible, permanent and updated mission through the educational activities offered to the community by the Universidad de Medellín.

The Universidad de Medellín is a private and non-profit Institution of higher education whose mission is the promotion of culture and the integral formation of professionals who will contribute to the solution of problems in the areas of specific knowledge, through teaching, furtherance of research and interaction with the society.

The Universidad de Medellín was born as a response to the intolerance and ideological persecution, prevailing in the country since 1948, which affected extensive sectors of the society at all social levels and on the diverse economic and intellectual activities.

This situation impelled a group of people, mainly professors and students of the Universidad de Antioquia, to think of the creation of an educational institution where free teaching (“Cátedra Libre”) in a responsible manner and intellectual work were a motor to drive the country.

After many meetings and discussions, they decided to create the “Corporación Universidad de Medellín”. On February first, 1950, in a big old house located in the neighborhood of Buenos Aires (“Barrio Buenos Aires”), forty students of the School of Law, and 112 students registered in the Lyceum (Secondary School), composed the student population which made the project of the new institution become a reality.

Later, the University moved its headquarters to the neighborhood known as Los Alpes, in Belén, on the southwest of Medellín, a space which pleasantly impresses, both for the harmony of its architecture and the charm green woody contour surrounding the buildings.

The campus, with 54.505 square meters built on a total surface of 370.000 square meters, offers a physical and service structure which facilitates the execution of the educational proposal dreamed by the Founders and adapted to the needs of the academic community.

The University of Medellín was born on the first of February, 1950, when a group of outstanding intellectual young people of the City of Medellín, acting as spokesmen of important sectors of the Antioquian community, took over the necessity of building a higher education center where teaching and learning could be approached with freedom.

Since its foundation, the leading idea of the University has always been to offer free education and without limitations by political, racial, social, religious and any other reasons whatsoever, and to foster scientific research oriented towards the search of solutions to the Colombian problems.

In 1961, the University moved to the new campus in Belén – Los Alpes, seat of the infrastructure which allows it to develop its undergraduate and graduate programs, and offer different services for the welfare of the university community.

The Universidad de Medellín is a private non-profit corporation of higher education which offers programs of university teaching through an integrated curricula, or by cycles of advanced teaching, non-formal and continuing education.
