The Universidad de los Andes is an autonomous and independent institution that promotes pluralism, diversity, dialogue, discussion, criticism, tolerance and respect for the ideas, beliefs and values of their members.

It also seeks academic excellence and teaches its students a critical and ethical education to strengthen their awareness of their social and civic responsibilities and their commitment to the analysis and solution of problems of the country.

To this end, develops and implements advanced methods of teaching and research, aimed at getting the student is the principal agent of his training and resolve problems to be presented with creativity and responsibility. Also, to encourage comprehensive training, flexible interdisciplinary environment conducive essential to integrate the arts, science, technology and humanities.

Recognizing the need for a highly qualified teaching corps as a generator and propagator of knowledge, enables them University professors to develop their activity as a life project that allows them to achieve their aspirations and professional and human development as a fundamental pillar of strengthening institutional.

Have programs for teaching and quality research and international projection, in a climate of freedom and diversity, Los Andes has the mission to train professionals of integrity, responsible, imaginative, able to reach high levels in their disciplines, strongly contribute to the cultural enhancement and country's economic and strengthening the values of coexistence and social peace.


Founded on November 16, 1948 by a group of youths led by Mario Laserna Pinzón, Universidad de los Andes is the first private higher education institution in Colombia of a secular and independent of political parties, others to defend the interests of some social or economic group.

Indeed, these characteristics made Andes leading an educational project at a historic moment in the country in which private universities were in their classrooms the influence of partisan conflict.

In this historical context, "the birth of the Andes not only due to the desire to give life to another college or educational interest only, but the intent of creating a new country. The purpose of educating new generations to build a new nation, "said Francisco Brigard Pizano, former rector of the university.

Therefore, since its founding, the purpose of the Andes is to provide excellent education to help close the knowledge gap between Colombia and the world's scientific advances.

With its new vision, later adopted by other universities in Colombia-Uniandes began work in 1949 with seven programs, 79 students and 16 teachers.
