Taking up the Enlightenment ideals of the Botanical Expedition, the University focuses its efforts on training of competent, critical and creative, with projection to the research of different areas of knowledge, to assume their commitment to knowledge, recognize the complexity of phenomena, that with a clear sense of respect for others and for the environment, contribute to social, economic, scientific and aesthetic of the Colombian nation in the international context.

The University of Bogotá Jorge Tadeo Lozano consolidate an academic community known for its teaching activities. Education will lead from a process of radical reconstruction of Colombian institutions to contribute to overcoming the current crisis. Jorge Tadeo Lozano University will start teaching models to make higher education accessible in its various forms to as many people as possible. In an environment of fellowship and freedom, the University will make all the processes performed by people with transparency are evaluated on their merits and the results of its management.

University Goal
The main objective of the University is to train professionals to develop comprehensive social, economic and cultural development of Colombia. That is, men who act with freedom, responsibility, tolerance and respect for human dignity and a strong academic background to be true and honest servants of the community.


The University of Bogotá Jorge Tadeo Lozano was founded in 1954 as a response both to the historical moment and the needs that the country had natural resources. The ravages of violence, the dictatorship of Rojas Pinilla and crisis induced University Joaquín Molano Campuzano, Javier Pulgar Vidal and Jaime Forero Valdés to create an institution that is "new generation devoid of sectarianism, bigotry and hatred, with a conscience full on the immeasurable value of human and natural resources "(J. Molano). On February 5, 1954 Thaddeus then founded with the goal of "continuing cultural and scientific work begun by the Botanical Expedition."

Work begins in 1955 with the American Indian College of Natural Resources, School of Geography, Cartography and Surveying and the Faculty of Economics and Statistics Administration, ending the decade at 59 created the Institute of Diplomacy and International Relations. Seven years later, in 1962 the School of Marine Science teaching begins Aquaculture and Oceanography in Colombia. In these early years in addition to the above powers, the university built into their charters the "University Women's Bordadita" (1957) which as its name implies was exclusively for women, had the faculty of Arts, School of Translators , School of Architectural Drawing, Decorative and Propaganda and the Art Institute, later (1959 - 1964) "The Bordadita" will be the Women's Institute, with the same schools and colleges in addition to journalism. With these University Colleges begins his story in the "old house" located on the corner with Cra 7 ª Calle 24.

The name of Jorge Tadeo Lozano be explained by the Botanical Expedition of the New Kingdom of Granada the paradigm that encouraged the founders, for the academic and scientific merits, as Jorge Tadeo Lozano was linked not only to the issue as a zoologist, but also was, with the Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Senora del Rosario in the department of chemistry and to participate actively in the cause of independence in New Granada, and for being a descendant of Joaquin Joaquín Gómez Molano Hoyos Maria Tadeo Lozano's husband and Isasi, widow of Jorge Tadeo Lozano.

The 60's marked the consolidation of the University academically and in their infrastructure. Faculties are founded agrology (1960), Accounting (1961), Business Administration (1962), Fine Arts, Graphic Design and Decoration and Architectural Drawing (1967), ends in 1991 and began design and development of interior space from in 1994 he began to call Interior Architecture, "International Trade and Marketing (1968). For these years, the University moved to the Old House to the current building located on the 4th race. between 22 and 23 streets, building that has been growing according to the demands from a university: research, sports, culture, etc. Also founded the Museum of the Sea, created the Student Welfare and the Department of Scientific Research.

In the 70's the Tadeo opens in Cartagena (1975), with programs in Marine Biology, Architecture, Foreign Trade and Tourism Administration. Create the Faculties of Social Communication in 1971 and the Management Information Systems in 1972, the first soon joined the Department of Audiovisual and television studios in 73. In 1971, he thinks of a technology race for agricultural management, and in 1972 began work the "Technology Administration Agriculture (in 1992 becomes a career), of the 70's also the Faculty of Food Engineering which began work in 1971 and systemization in 1972 and in 1974 Industrial Design.

The investigation is present in these years with the Center for Economic Research-CIE-Research Center-Chemie-Agricultural Marketing and Research Center. The first two did not reach the decade, the third continues to work for and research on the environmental dimension. Currently, the University begins to open to other possibilities and play new research areas that could be seen as a new understanding of "environment", ie, attempts are made to accommodate within this social context, youth, history, ...- culture and organizes activities such as the International Symposium on Scientific Research - an interdisciplinary "(1993).

The 80's and 90's are marked for the Bicentennial of the Botanical Expedition (1783-1983), where there was the creation of three Academic Areas currently being developed by the University, and three areas were addressed, directly or indirectly by the Expedition Botany: natural resources, economics and the arts. The University then creates the Area of Engineering and Natural Resources Management consists of Agriculture, Marine Biology, Food Engineering, and Engineering agrology Geographic. Area Administrative Law and Economic Systems, consisting of Law, Business Administration, Management Information Systems, International Business, Accounting, Economics, Marketing, International Relations, Administration of Foreign Trade and Tourism Business Administration, the latter two Cartagena and the Area of Art, Design and Communication, Architecture programs (Cartagena), Interior Architecture, Fine Arts, Social Communication (Bogotá and Cartagena), Graphic Design (Bogotá and Cartagena) Industrial Design and Advertising.

For these years opens also the seat of Marine Biology in Santa Marta, the SAE is strengthened by the data center, research is reinforced by studies such as monitoring the Whale Heart Satellite, SCVs; is carried out Curricular Renewal Undergraduate and creates and strengthens the Graduate Vicerrectoría initiating work with three specializations: International Trade, Agricultural Marketing and Development Planning. Graduate and Professional gradually have been increasing and diversifying their proposals to the Area Health and the Environment, among others.
Physical development is another important milestone of this period not only for the University, Barrio las Nieves where it is located, has also been benefited by this physical and social level, has served to be articulating a cultural hub that includes the Library National Museum of Modern Art, Central University and the Universidad de los Andes.

In late 1999, the new Campus of the Caribbean (Cartagena 4 and 5 December) adopted a radical reform of the university. It adopted an Institutional Educational Project (PEI) integral, which came off a new organizational structure, changes in curricula, the establishment of a Credit System instead of rigid syllabus and the approval of the teachers' statute to regulate the relationships between University and its teachers.

With the election of Jaime Pinzón López as Rector in February 2000, the institution began his preparation to qualify for the accreditation of its academic programs. The new millennium opened a period whose primary objective is "the enlargement of horizons through education of individuals committed to the production of knowledge and balanced with the social transformation", owners of "critical consciousness, social and political, fair and open free, that [s] give legitimacy and moral force in society, to contribute [s] to the consolidation and strengthening of culture, generation and transmission of knowledge. "

To achieve this, the undergraduate programs have been restated to incorporate a humanistic basis, a technical foundation and specific knowledge of each race, it encourages research and learning English was made compulsory.
