Historical Review

Antioch University is the realization of an old dream of Antioquia society since colonial times depended on the colleges and universities Bogota and Popayan seminars for the education of their children.

Since the late colonial period the residents of the town of Medellin, now the municipality of Medellin, capital of Antioquia Department, asked the Spanish Crown for permission to create a school-convent. This initiative was echoed by the Spanish royalty and is supported by the Royal Charter of King Charles IV of February 9, 1801, with the opening of an establishment-oriented work by members of the Franciscan Community.

During the country's independence process was coordinated by the College Republican project and directed from the council of the Village. In 1822, consolidated national independence, the Vice President, General Francisco de Paula Santander, promoted the establishment of a new curriculum on campus. Five years later, President Simón Bolívar granted permission to teach in jurisprudence.

Much of the nineteenth century the country was the scene of wars and armed confrontations, partisan politics and ideological currents that were not life outside the university, and the various conflicts that the University was closed and its cloisters occupied by the sides of the war . But this was reborn and took a new direction for education in the region.

Very different views on its educational work have found expression in the history of the University of Antioquia. Hence the name changes, turnover in leadership and emphasis or opening in certain areas of knowledge.
For example, during the first thirty years of last century the Republican Party took on the task of making the University at the point of solving the problems of the region, refocusing the content of the materials acquired laboratories bibliographic material and engaged the services of distinguished professors.

In that period the university and its graduates began an intense activity in the field of tropical diseases, venereal campaign, the culmination of Antioquia Railway and the extension of the agricultural frontier of the Department.

For this time is for the redevelopment of the former Franciscan building located in the Plaza de San Ignacio, which currently stands as a symbol institutional and cultural heritage of Colombia.
In the thirties were created the Revista Universidad de Antioquia, the Cultural Station and the Central Library, which have been so far three basic lines of cultural expansion and contribution to knowledge and preservation of regional culture.

In the sixties, with international loans and aid, was carried out the construction of University City, with a consequent expansion of quotas and the plant teachers, creation of new faculties and academic training in new disciplines.

In the late twentieth century, the University strengthened its presence in the regions of Antioquia, with its regionalization program included in its Development Plan 1995/2005, in addition to the construction of the University Research Office, SIU.

Today the institution is still a draft Antioquia society seeking its implementation of the Development Plan 2006/2016 "A research university, innovative and humanist to serve the region and the country," in 2016 to be the leading university country's research and one of the best in Latin America, offering excellent training, be leaders in the contributions to the socio-economic transformation of the country and become a true scenario of diversity and intercultural dialogue within the framework of respect for pluralism and the environment.
