Antioch University is a state institution at the departmental, public service building on Higher Education, created by Act LXXI of December 4, 1878 the Sovereign State of Antioquia, an entity organized as Autonomous University with a special regime, linked the Ministry of Education as it pertains to policy and planning in the education sector and the National Science and Technology.
Enjoys legal status, academic autonomy, administrative, financial and budget, and government revenue and its own independent, is governed by the Constitution, Law 30 of 1992, the other provisions that apply under the special system , and internal rules issued in exercise of their autonomy.
Because of their transformative the University of Antioquia affects all sectors of society through research, teaching and extension.
Research and teaching are the pillars of the academic life of the University and both are linked with the extension to achieve corporate goals of an academic or social.
The research, source of knowledge, generating and support of teaching practice, is part of the curriculum. Aims at generating and testing knowledge, aimed at developing science, knowledge and technology, and production and adaptation of technology for finding solutions to the problems of the region and country.
Teaching, research-based, can train students in disciplinary and professional fields of their choice, by developing curricula and use teaching methods that facilitate the achievement of ethical and academic purposes of the university. Diffusive in character and training of teaching has a social function that determines for scientific and moral responsibilities professor against students, the institution and society.
The spread expresses the direct and permanent relationship that the University has with the company, operating in two-way projection of the institution in this society and in that, is done through processes and programs to interact with various sectors and actors social, expressed in artistic, scientific, technical and technological consulting, consultancy and auditing, and programs for the dissemination of the arts, knowledge and exchange of experience and financial support for university work.
Includes continuing education programs and other activities to ensure the general welfare. Thus the institution fulfills one of its main functions, to that end, its graduates, such as living and active expression of the university in society, play a central role.
The University treats the various cultural productions and social needs made the subject of the lecture and the research society, in turn, participates in the university production and benefits from it.
Antioch University is the realization of an old dream of Antioquia society since colonial times depended on the colleges and universities Bogota and Popayan seminars for the education of their children.
Since the late colonial period the residents of the town of Medellin, now the municipality of Medellin, capital of Antioquia Department, asked the Spanish Crown for permission to create a school-convent. This initiative was echoed by the Spanish royalty and is supported by the Royal Charter of King Charles IV of February 9, 1801, with the opening of an establishment-oriented work by members of the Franciscan Community.
During the country's independence process was coordinated by the College Republican project and directed from the council of the Village. In 1822, consolidated national independence, the Vice President, General Francisco de Paula Santander, promoted the establishment of a new curriculum on campus. Five years later, President Simón Bolívar granted permission to teach in jurisprudence.
Much of the nineteenth century the country was the scene of wars and armed confrontations, partisan politics and ideological currents that were not life outside the university, and the various conflicts that the University was closed and its cloisters occupied by the sides of the war . But this was reborn and took a new direction for education in the region.
Very different views on its educational work have found expression in the history of the University of Antioquia. Hence the name changes, turnover in leadership and emphasis or opening in certain areas of knowledge.
For example, during the first thirty years of last century the Republican Party took on the task of making the University at the point of solving the problems of the region, refocusing the content of the materials acquired laboratories bibliographic material and engaged the services of distinguished professors.
In that period the university and its graduates began an intense activity in the field of tropical diseases, venereal campaign, the culmination of Antioquia Railway and the extension of the agricultural frontier of the Department.
For this time is for the redevelopment of the former Franciscan building located in the Plaza de San Ignacio, which currently stands as a symbol institutional and cultural heritage of Colombia.
In the thirties were created the Revista Universidad de Antioquia, the Cultural Station and the Central Library, which have been so far three basic lines of cultural expansion and contribution to knowledge and preservation of regional culture.
In the sixties, with international loans and aid, was carried out the construction of University City, with a consequent expansion of quotas and the plant teachers, creation of new faculties and academic training in new disciplines.
In the late twentieth century, the University strengthened its presence in the regions of Antioquia, with its regionalization program included in its Development Plan 1995/2005, in addition to the construction of the University Research Office, SIU.
Today the institution is still a draft Antioquia society seeking its implementation of the Development Plan 2006/2016 "A research university, innovative and humanist to serve the region and the country," in 2016 to be the leading university country's research and one of the best in Latin America, offering excellent training, be leaders in the contributions to the socio-economic transformation of the country and become a true scenario of diversity and intercultural dialogue within the framework of respect for pluralism and the environment.
