The University of Magallanes is a regional institution of the State of Chile, which contributes to equitable development, sustainable and improving the quality of life of the inhabitants of the macro Chilean Patagonia.

This means that the University expects to be recognized by the desire to establish an institution which, linked to the development of individuals and communities in the region lead generation and management of knowledge in the fields of humanities, science, technology and the arts through teaching, social connectedness and research, bearing in mind respect and care for the environment. MISSION

The University of Magallanes is a Regional University of the State of Chile, mainly focused on: training in advanced human capital in the Region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica, the creation of knowledge with special emphasis on applied research into the reality of Patagonia , the Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica, and the cultural linkages with the regional average.

In the field of advanced human capital formation, the organization supports his work in an atmosphere of quality, promoting social inclusion of students from socially and economically vulnerable groups.

In research, the University aims to strengthen research and publications in various disciplines that make up the social sciences, humanities, engineering and natural sciences in terrestrial and marine ecosystems, mainly in the Region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica.

In its relationship with the environment, the organization encourages the relationship with the public and private agencies in the region, and strengthening management and cultural heritage of the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica. Our Origin

Created in 1981 as the successor to the former headquarters of the State Technical University was founded in 1961 in Punta Arenas, Magallanes University is a public entity with a strong tradition in the Chilean university system. Started its activities with about twenty students and the issuance of engineering courses, and at present with an enrollment of over three thousand students from four faculties, through which is active in teaching, research and extension aimed at developing of the southern region of the country.

Foundations of Our Academic Excellence

The academic staff of the University of Magallanes is comprised of 160 whole days and a large number of adjunct professors. As the level of sophistication much of our faculty have a Ph.D. or Master.
In the constant challenge to modernize its academic and management, the University of Magallanes is concerned with updating the curriculum of vocational and technical careers based on professional skills required for the future.
This is compounded by the development of a modern infrastructure for classrooms, laboratories and libraries, in addition to strengthening its graduate programs and the constant improvement of its academic staff
Teaching activities, research and extension are carried out through its four faculties: Engineering, Science, Humanities, Social Sciences and Health, and Economic and Legal Sciences, operators offering 30 undergraduate programs and 16 technical level, a higher enrollment of 3000 students who are prepared for high academic excellence with an emphasis on development.

Location and regional presence

Located in the Region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica, the University focuses its actions on one of the most beautiful and extensive regions of Chilean Patagonia, concentrating its actions on the campus of Punta Arenas, including the Instituto de la Patagonia. University activities are also performed in the Academic Units of Puerto Natales, Porvenir (Tierra del Fuego), and Puerto Williams, in the latter through the operation of Omora Park.

Research Areas

In the constant effort made by all regional university to help develop their region, the University allocates significant resources to improving academic and research priority according to their plan of development areas such as Marine Sciences, Earth Sciences , Natural Resources, Energy and Environment and Human Sciences. Moreover, through the Institute of Patagonia, the Directorate of National Antarctic Programs and the Center for Quaternary Studies of Fire-Patagonia and Antarctica, the University conducts research in areas considered relevant and comparative advantage in the Antarctic and Subantarctic
