Universidad Católica del Norte, with 54 years of life, is a private institution of public law, inserted into the advanced group of universities of the National System of Higher Education and ruled supreme in their bodies by the Catholic Church.

Underpinned by the values of Christian Humanism, is to the constant search for the truth to contribute to the development of the individual, society and cultural heritage of the community through teaching, research and extension.

This institution was born at the initiative of a group of priests from the Society of Jesus, and his benefactress Mrs. Berta Gonzalez Astorga, formally began his duties on May 31, 1956, being the eighth college founded in Chile and the third Catholic vocation.

In order to serve from the fields of teaching, research and extension, the University of North was born in 1956, thanks to the enthusiastic initiative of the priests of the Society of Jesus, who fought with determination to realize this desire for nortino youths: a university in the service of culture, science and development, but with a full commitment to the Christian faith. This project was echoed and could realize, thanks to the generous support of Mrs. Berta Gonzalez Astorga, who donated the land on which they erected the then University of the North.

With an enrollment of 100 students and 20 teachers began classes on March 25, 1957, under the wing of the Catholic University of Valparaiso. Remained so until 1964, when it was recognized by the Ministry of Education, achieving full autonomy and became the third Catholic university in the country and the eighth traditional public vocation.

His achievements

Since its inception, has led development efforts by increasing and diversifying their work, through training of professionals and scientists, developing successfully in the areas of research in its mission of cultural broker and its role in forming human resources , always attentive to the demands of an academic nature required by their social environment.

Thus currently has an enrollment of more than 10 000 students and in recent years has made significant efforts to realize a wide range of graduate programs, Master and PhD in various areas of knowledge.

Over 70 percent of academic staff with postgraduate studies, and has achieved important scientific productivity numerous articles published in indexed journals and obtaining patents and international licenses.

He also stressed his position of privilege in the national in terms of project award from the National Scientific and Technological Development (FONDECYT) and the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific and Technological Advice (Fondef).

All these achievements, place the UCN inside the Higher Education Institutions in the country advanced, transforming it into a scientific and technological North Chile.

Aware of the demands of a globalized world, the UCN guides his work in developing and positioning a Distinctive Education Project which will enable their students build skills, abilities and skills, supported by technology platforms that will facilitate occupational integration, promoting a distinctive profile of UCN educator, capable of integrating teams both nationally and internationally.

The strategic objectives that guide the Universidad Catolica del Norte, are included in Corporate Development Plan 2010 - 2014, which are aligned and supported by the view that UCN is proposed, which is "to be recognized as a Catholic university of art and social vocation. "

Vision

The Vision of the Catholic University of the North is "to be a leading Catholic university and social vocation." From this perspective means that the UCN guides its institutional action:

• Strengthen its position among the universities of the National System of Higher Education to become a regional development officer, national and international.

• To train professionals for the public to participate actively in society, harmonizing cross curricula assimilate an integral concept in the country.

Mission

Universidad Católica del Norte is the original source of its existence the Christian Humanism. In this sense, the organization is geared towards the constant search for the truth to contribute to the development of the individual, society and cultural heritage of the community.

Its work is mainly deployed in northern Chile, and includes the creation of new knowledge, training of undergraduate and graduate excellence aimed at people with academic merit, supporting the learning processes in the values of Catholicism, and making a connection with the medium impact on the development of local and regional society, and strengthen research and teaching processes of the university.
Principles

Universidad Catolica del Norte is a university community organic founded, inspired and governed in their supreme bodies of the Catholic Church, born in northern Chile, supported largely by the Chilean society, for development of man and all men of our people.
