The University of Bío-Bío is heir to the oldest tradition of state and public higher education in the Bío Bío Region. Its origins date back to the creation of the State Technical University, UTE, 9 April 1947, under the presidency of Gabriel González Videla.

The joint venture officially opened its doors in 1952, after the Senate approved its Organic Statute, contrary to the strong opposition of the University of Chile, where authorities believed that the new home of higher education should operate under their custody. In Concepcion, the school would play an important role to meet the needs and challenges of the region as one of the poles of the country's industrial development, not only through undergraduate teaching but also by scientific and technological research.

Creating Ñuble Headquarters of the University of Chile, first as Regional College, was the result of broad civic movement intended to prevent young people graduating from High School had to move to Santiago and other cities to continue to higher education . In the beginning, occupied the premises donated by the Santa Cecilia Music Society, in addition to a building on Liberty Avenue, where he ran the School of Languages. In 1981, while the assets of the nascent IPROCH increased with the incorporation of the former facilities of the Ecole Normale de Chillán which now houses the Campus La Castilla.
Later, in 1988, the merger of the University of Bio Bio and the Professional Institute of Chillán gave rise to what is now the University of Bío-Bío, joining two institutions that took the challenge to walk together and build a story common.

The Educational Model of the University of Bío-Bío is a general framework that provides an overall conceptual base for teaching across the university and contains the representation of the design, structure, essential curricular components of the training process and relationships between them. The orientations of the educational model guiding the management curriculum of the University of Bío-Bío, considering the following context:
Today's society . The need to integrate new components to the training that respond to recent knowledge, skills and attitudes that derive from the regional environment, national and global levels, such as the internationalization of the country, the need to remain competitive through innovation and venture, the transition to a knowledge society and the demands of quality assurance in education
The student . The current socio-cultural context sets up a subject with specific characteristics, needs and expectations of different formation, which involves the development of new skills and attitudes that enable social integration and inclusion in society and professional excellence.
The growth and diversity of the population entering higher education today is a new event which supports new requirements, because it has a kind of student who has greater access and management of information technology, leading new ways to learn, communicate and relate to their own immediate vicinity and the world.
EVELOPING A training proposal, which is materialized through the Teaching and Learning Process , which takes the key components of a new way of learning consistent with current advances of science, culture and society, allowing continuous feedback of teaching and learning processes and, in turn, provides indicators to assess and refine the model itself.
The Educational Model of the UBB has as its purpose the integral formation of students, considering its development as a person and discipline, combining the model for this teaching and learning, knowledge, skills and attitudes.
The development dimension of the person aims the improvement of capabilities that allow human growth such as communication skills, reflective, personal and social responsibility.
The disciplinary dimension main purpose is to develop knowledge and skills that enable socio-professional integration.
Accordingly, the University of Bío-Bío form a competent and autonomous in their job performance combines the dimensions of human and disciplinary training that meets the needs of society and a changing job market in a globalized world.
The educational model is operationalized from the curriculum, which provides key components for a systemic construction, flexible and diverse, according to the nature of racing.
