Universidade do Extremo Sul Catarinense
Criciúma, Brazil

University description (as per official university website)

The Unesc mission is "to educate through teaching, research and extension, in order to promote the quality and sustainability of living environment".

Future vision
"Being recognized as a Community University with excellence in professional training and ethics of the citizen as well as with the production of scientific and technological knowledge, committed to the social and environmental aspects".

In a plenary session on June 17th, 1997, the State Board of Education approved the transformation of Unifacri (Union of Colleges of Criciúma) into Unesc. As a mission, Unesc has defined: "promoting regional development to improve the environmental quality of life", having Fucri as a maintainer.

The management promoted by the rector of Unesc, Gildo Volpato, and the Vice-Rector, Márcio Antonio Fiori - elected in 2009 by the academic community - has two principles: excellence in teaching, research and extension, and shared management, participatory and decentralized.

Post-graduate Courses
Since 1980, when the first Post-graduate Latu Sensu courses were implanted, we offered over 150 courses and about 4000 students got the specialist's degree, currently there are 6 courses in the Law Area, 8 courses in the Educational Area, 5 courses in the Managerial Area, 5 courses in the Engineering Area and 5 in the Health Area. In 2002, the University created its first Masters: Environmental Sciences - recommended by the Coordination of Improvement of Higher Level Personnel (Capes). In 2004 two other Masters courses were recommended by Capes: Education and Health Sciences. In 2006, Capes approved the Ph.D. in Health Sciences in biomedicine field. Visit “Nossos Cursos” on UNESC web site for further information.

Unesc believes that the search itself is a dimension of the University and the institution loses its meaning without it. Five major areas are encompassed in the research developed at Unesc: Biological Sciences, Health Sciences, Math and Earth Sciences, Humanities and Applied Social Sciences.

Permanent Projects that develop extension activities of Unesc Academic Departments stimulate and ensure the academic involvement in the discussion with community demands. Besides the sports and cultural activities, Unesc offers 16 other extension courses.

By being placed in the context of the University, students from Elementary and High School from CAP can use the structure of our institution. By this way, the learning focused on culture, sports and science is emphasized and students have free access to the library, laboratories and the entire sportive complex inside Unesc.

The Institute for Environmental Research and Technology is a progress for science research that provides regional development to improve the environmental quality of life. It has 14 labs that underpin the University in developing internal and external research, providing services to companies in the region.

The Agency of Development, Innovation and Technology Transference (Aditt) promotes the link between the University and the potential demands of society. It seeks to raise funds and transfer technology for regional and sustainable development of the institution.
