The Federal Office for Education, Science and Technology of Ontario (IFBA), created by Law No. 11.892/2008, is the result of the changes promoted in the former Federal Center for Technological Education of Bahia (BA-Cefet). With century-old tradition in vocational education and for over a decade in higher education, the Institute operates in line with the professional demands of the labor market.

The IFBA is an institution compared to universities, but has a different structure and more extensive. Operates from the basic training, through courses in high school until graduation and graduate school. Today, it has graduations as the degrees of Directors, Industrial Electrical Engineering Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, and graduate as a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering. It also has 25 groups and 190 research grants. With the development of applied research also contributes to the entrepreneurial culture and technological state.

With the expansion of the Federal Network for Professional Education, the goal is that by the end of 2010, the IFBA encompassing nine existing campuses - Salvador, Camaçari Advanced Center in Dias D'Avila, Santo Amaro, Simões Filho, Valencia, Vitória da Conquista / Center for Advanced Brumado, Eunápolis, Barriers and Porto Seguro, plus new campuses that will be deployed in Feira de Santana, Jequié, Islanders, Jacobina, Irecê, Paulo Afonso, JJ, totaling 16 campuses.

100 years of professional education - The IFBA, together with the institutions that make up the Federal Network, celebrates, in 2009, the centenary of the Professional and Technical Education. Built from the Decree No. 7566 of 23 September 1909, with the deployment of 19 Schools Apprentice Craftsmen, the Federal Network of Professional and Technological complete a century of professional education free to the Brazilians.

Starting this year, will host a round of events dedicated to reflection on the training of manpower in Brazil. New schools are under construction in all regions of the country. The goal is to achieve, by 2010, 354 technical schools and 500 thousand jobs.

The 38 Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology of the country, created by Law No. 11,892 of December 29, 2008, are institutions of higher education, basic and professional character pluricurricular and several campus, specialized in offering vocational and technological education in the various methods of teaching.

They arise from the old Federal Centers for Technological Education (CEFETs), Federal Agrotechnical Schools and Technical Schools linked to universities, making up the Federal Network of Professional Education, Science and Technology.

The Federal Institutes main purpose is the provision of vocational and technological education to train and qualify people with views on professional skills in various sectors of the economy, with emphasis on socio-economic development locally, regionally and nationally.

The Federal Institutes exercise the role of institutions and accredited certification of professional skills, being able to register for courses offered diplomas.
The Federal Institutes are empowered to open and close courses, within the limits of its territorial area of operation.
The Federal Institutes shall be treated as federal universities regarding the regulation, supervision and evaluation of institutions and higher education courses.

Services Offered
Higher education courses in technology for the training of professionals for different sectors of the economy.
Courses, as well as special programs for teacher training, teachers of basic education, especially in science and mathematics, and vocational education. A minimum of 20% of seats is designed for this purpose.
Bachelor's and engineering, aiming to train professionals for different sectors and areas;

Refresher courses and post graduation courses (specialization) for the training of specialists in different fields of knowledge.
Post-graduate studies (masters and doctorate) that will help promote the establishment of solid foundations in education, science and technology, to promote the creation and technological innovation.

Technical professional education of high school, preferably in the form of integrated courses for the graduates of basic education and the public education of youths and adults, with a minimum of 50% of the vacancies offered by the Institutes.

Initial and continuing training of workers, aiming at capacity building, improvement, specialization and updating of professionals at all levels of education in the areas of vocational and technological education.
Applied research, encouraging the development of technical and technological solutions, extending its benefits to the community.
Outreach activities in conjunction with the labor market and social sectors, with emphasis on production, development and dissemination of scientific and technological knowledge;

New organizational structure
The Federal Institute is organized into several campus structure, with an annual budget proposal identified for each campus and to the rectory.

The Federal Institutes will have the rectory as the executive body, composed of a dean, appointed by the President, for a term of four years, allowed an extension, and five Pro-Rectors are appointed by the Dean.
The campuses will be headed by directors-general, appointed by the Rector for a term of four years, one renewal allowed.
The unit of Salvador, the former seat of Cefet-BA, Salvador becomes Campus and will be equal to the other campuses distributed throughout the state.

The Director General of the former Cefet shall exercise the office of Rector of the current Federal Institute until the end of his term and on an ongoing pro tempore, with its mandate to promote, within 180 (one hundred and eighty) days, the preparation and submission to the Ministry of Education of the proposed statute and IDP - Institutional Development Plan, securing the participation of the academic community in the construction of these instruments.
The Directors of teaching units on campus transformed Federal Institute of exercise, until the end of his term in character and pro tempore, the position of Director General of its campus.

The creation of new federal institutions of vocational and technological education, as well as expansion of existing institutions, will consider the model of the Federal Institute, noting the parameters and standards set by the Ministry of Education.
All servers will be maintained in its current capacity, except those who are appointed by the senior management of each Federal Institute to join the staff of the Rector.
From the meetings of the Board of Directors of Technical Education Centres (Concefet) is studying the possibility of creating a single statute for all federal offices, aiming to unify their action.

Transfer of Funds
With the change to the Federal Institute and several campus for a structure, the funds are decentralized. Instead of being passed by the general direction to the teaching units, each campus will have administrative and financial autonomy.

Percentage and more students
The law establishing the Federal Institutes states that 20% of seats should be reserved for graduate courses and special programs, teacher training, with a view to training teachers for basic education, especially in science and mathematics, and vocational education .
Of the remaining 80%, 50% correspond to training courses for middle level technicians and 30% for bachelor's, engineering, technology and the postgraduate broad sense and strict sense. The IFBahia intends to expand the supply of technological courses. Currently, it offers undergraduate courses in Radiology Technology and Systems Analysis and Development. Besides increasing the seats in education with the creation of the rectory and seven more campuses, will also increase the availability for servers, via tenders. From April, there will be new authorization for quantitative positions in the capital and campuses within the state.
