On July 20, 1978, was established the Community College of Caceres, who brings his story to have been born mark inside. Based on Law No. 703 was published the Municipal Decree 190, creating the Community College of Caceres (IESC), linked to the Municipal Education and Welfare, with the goal of promoting higher education and research. It works as a municipal entity on August 15.

Through the Federal Decree 89,719 of May 30, 1984, authorized the operation of the courses offered by the Institute. In 1985, the State Law 4960 of December 19, the Executive establishing the University Center Foundation of Caceres (FUCUC), founding entity, autonomous, linked to the Department of Education and Culture of the State of Mato Grosso, which aims to promote research and study of different branches of knowledge and scientific dissemination, technical and cultural.

The State Law 5495 of July 17, 1989, amends the 4960 Act and meeting the legislative standards of Education began to be called the Higher Education Center Foundation of Caceres (FCESC).

In 1992, Complementary Law No. 14 of 16 January the Foundation Center for Higher Education of Caceres (FCESC) shall be called the Foundation of Higher Education of Mato Grosso (FESMAT), whose organizational structure is implemented from May 1993.

On December 15, 1993, through the Complementary Law 30, establishing themselves at the State University of Mato Grosso (Unemat) maintained by the Foundation of the State University of Mato Grosso (Funemt). To overcome the geographical barriers imposed by the huge land area, develops into a multi-campus structure. Is hereby created the Administrative Headquarters in Caceres and new campuses in different parts of the state: Sinop, Alta Floresta, New Xavantina, Alto Araguaia, Pontes e Lacerda, Middle Araguaia (located in Luciara) Valley Teles Pires (Colíder), Barra do Bugres and Tangara da Serra.

On January 10, 1995, the State Board of Education of Mato Grosso endorses and approves the Statute of Funemat and Unemat through Resolution 001/95-CEE/MT, published in the Official Gazette of the State of Mato Grosso on March 14 1996.

On August 10, 1999 the University is accredited by the State Board of Education for five years, then going to enjoy autonomy for teaching, scientific and teaching.

In 30 years, has grown, diversified and cemented himself as the State University of Mato Grosso: a public institution, free and quality.

Today, UNEMAT is present in 108 of the 141 municipalities in Mato Grosso, with 11 campuses and 15 educational centers. Approximately 15,000 students are served by 82 scheduled courses offered in different modalities and across the state, 49 specializations and two Masters institutions.

The Unemat develops pioneering actions to meet the specific demands of the state. Through the Project Third Grade 44 Indian ethnic groups have access to higher education. The full degree qualification Parceled allow practicing teachers. Open and Distance Education Pedagogy course takes the 28 municipalities. A specific and differentiated degree in Agronomy, as members of social movements.

To meet the huge demand of the state, has a table with 619 effective teachers, with 105 doctors and 321 masters. We have a policy to assure our teachers priority to research, teaching and extension to form favorable environment for creative activity, contributing to social improvement.

The shares held by the extent and culture Unemat totaling 195 projects. Fellows are 731 students in activities that meet the demands of local communities, with respect to socio-cultural characteristics. We have 71 research groups and 220 registered projects in development in different areas of knowledge.

The University prides itself on being a democratic institution and deeply attuned to the Brazilian context and constantly seeks to improve the quality of teaching, research and extension, through the hiring of skilled, professional development and encourage investment in appropriate infrastructure.
