University description (as per official university website)
The Federal University of Goiás's mission is to generate, systematize and socialize knowledge and expertise, training professionals and individuals that promote the transformation and development of society.
The Federal University of Goiás was established on December 14, 1960 meeting with the five colleges that existed in Goiania: the Faculty of Law, Faculty of Pharmacy and Dentistry, School of Engineering, the Conservatory of Music and the Faculty of Medicine. From this date, Goiás went on to form their own professional staff and not rely on skilled labor coming from other regions of the country. For young people this meant goianos professional training opportunities and a public intellectual, free and quality. It was a milestone in the history of the state.
However, that victory was preceded goiana society through a process that required great efforts by teachers and students of the time. In 1959, teachers of five schools that constitute its foundation in the UFG formed the Permanent Commission for the Establishment of the University of Central Brazil ", chaired by Professor Natal e Silva, then director of the Law Faculty of Goiania. The commission's objective was to formulate a bill creating the University and deliver it to Congress.>
In parallel with the mobilization of teachers, students goianos promoted a vigorous movement for the creation of a public university, to be maintained by the federal government. They created, in April 1959, the Frente Pro-Education Federal University, who organized meetings, hearings and discussions with authorities in student assemblies or congresses, and organized marches and rallies vindicated.
The project was developed and teachers, plus collaborations with parliamentarians from Goiás, became law in Congress. The signing of the decree was made president Juscelino Kubitschek, the date of December 18, 1961, in a ceremony at Civic Square which drew thousands of people, demonstrating the desire of the population of Goiás for the creation of the university. The inaugural lecture took place the following year, on March 7 in a ceremony that filled the Teatro Goiânia.
The next step was to establish an educational project for the institution. For this, the UFG held the Week of Planning, "which brought together exhibitors and important personalities of the cultural and educational importance of the country, as sociologists and Ernesto Darcy de Oliveira Junior. After several discussions it was decided that the UFG should overcome the classical model of education that existed in Brazil to get closer to the contemporary global reality.
In this view, "the institution should be a central processing educational, cultural, social and political culture inspired by the ideological conception and without pre-conceived", the second words of the then rector Natal e Silva. The materialization of this idea was to intensify the cultural life of the university and greater integration among students, teachers and community. |
