His first degree courses were offered in 1964, then as integrated colleges, in 1975, with recognition by the MEC, became the first Methodist University in Latin America.

But the tradition that guides the work of UNIMEP is much older: the University College had its origin in Piracicaba, founded in 1881 by U.S. missionary Martha Watts. The College and UNIMEP institutions are maintained by the Educational Institute of Piracicaba - EPO, also part of this set the Piracicaba School of Music "Maestro Ernst Mahle.

Globally, its roots date back to the oldest Methodist educational institution, the Kingswood School. Founded in 1748 by John Wesley in England, Kingswood gave rise to more than 700 educational institutions, including schools, colleges and universities. A universe of which UNIMEP is an integral and whose commitment to education has been reaffirmed and refined for over 250 years.
