UNIVERSITY IGUAZU - UNIG was created from the maturing of Unified Colleges in New Delhi, by Ordinance No. 1318 MEC of September 16, 1993, published in the Federal of 20/09/1993, section I, pg. 14017. Its sponsor the Association of Higher Education New Delhi - SESNA, nonprofit, philanthropic in nature, with headquarters in the city of Nova Iguašu - Rio de Janeiro.

The UNIG integrates currently five campuses, namely:

I Campus New Delhi
Campus II Ambulatory Teaching
Campus III Training Centre Dr. Paulo Machado Frˇes
Campus V Itaperuna

Its headquarters Campus I, through which interacts in the social, economic, cultural and political to the Lowlands and the northern state of Rio de Janeiro, generating technology and fundamental knowledge for the advancement of those regions, to the State and for the country

Starting its activities in 1970, the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters in New Delhi, delivered the first unit of tertiary education to the Baixada Fluminense. This pioneering spirit was with the implementation of courses of Arts (Education: Literature-Portuguese and Portuguese-English), Mathematics, Physics, Life Sciences, recognized in 1974. In 1976, the Faculty of Education has also been recognized to contribute significantly to basic education in the region.

Four years later, in 1974, with almost all the initial courses already recognized, there was the implementation of the Law School, iguašuana legitimate aspirations of the community.

Conscious and aware of their responsibility to improve the quality of instruction, after the consolidation of units in operation, returned to plead SESNA new courses: Medicine in 1976, and Dentistry and Degree in Data Processing Technology in 1988 and 1989, respectively.

All courses offered by UNIG emerged identifying characteristics of the region, with observed market demands concerning professional profiles identified.

The creation of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in New Delhi was a decisive step to dealing with serious health problems of the local population in view of the lack of medical care and poor sanitation conditions identified in this region.

The Teaching Clinic UNIG compounds, significantly, the history of health in the region.

Throughout its existence, and promote significant changes in the surrounding region, the UNIG has transformed itself in a continuous process of improving the administrative, pedagogical and technological.

Excel in the quality of education and other services offered, pursuing excellence, is a principle that has, over the decades of its existence, and inspiring their decisions.

Cause development in the state, noting demands in their area of expertise, innovating role in the progress of this result, is the focus of actions for this guideline.

The decision to expand its activities to the municipalities of San Juan de Meriti Itaperuna and consolidated in 1996, thanks to demand from municipalities, offering six and seven courses, respectively, brought to the state under the generative force of progress in community , formerly restricted to the municipality of Nova Iguacu.

In 1997, included new graduate courses to those already offered: Nursing, Pharmacy, Physical Education and Physiotherapy.

The deployment process of new courses and the expansion of existing ones to other municipalities, has been continuously followed by actions in order to ensure and enhance the quality of services offered.

As a university, UNIG's mission is to generate scientific and technological progress in the country and directly serve the community, drawing on the resources and means available.

This mission requires an agile and flexible administrative model, capable of capturing and translating the expectations of society, particularly the dynamics of the market, which involves professional training. To that end, UNIG has a modern administrative structure, where the Dean is assisted by three Vice-Presidency, namely:

Dean of Graduate Studies and Research - PROP
Administrative Dean - PROAD
In setting their policies and priorities, UNIG seeks revitalization and improvement of undergraduate education, promoting research as a creative agent and renewal of knowledge and encouraging graduate, broad and strict sense, integrated programs for courses extension.

Manage the continuous expansion of this University represents a great challenge.

Expand, increasing in quality, adapt to the characteristics of the society in which UNIG is inserted, and also excel in the generation of new technologies, disseminating and renewing scientific knowledge implies much larger challenge.

Overcoming this challenge has been the keynote of the administration of UNIG in line with the entity sponsor, the Association of Higher Education New Delhi - SESNA.
