The University Guarulhos is the result of an audacious gamble of six educators, who in 1969 leased the Claretian College of Guarulhos, confessional education organization that entered into crisis in the late 60's.

After stabilizing the college, the group was received at the Federal Board of Education to request authorization for the operation of the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters Farias Brito. On August 12, 1970, the Ministry of Education signed the decree authorizing the opening of the institution by offering five courses: Pedagogy, Literature, Mathematics, Social Studies and Physical and Biological Sciences. On 30 August the same year, the College promotes the vestibular first in its history.

With classes in the morning and evening, the academic activities of the first semester of graduate began on September 21, 1970. Classes were taught in the same building where the Claretian College - now called, also, Farias Brito. The structures were simple: the classrooms and library. Teaching, yet contemporary. With clear interests and goals, educators who comprised the administration of the Faculty selected teachers with great training and reference to compose the faculty of the institution.

It was the early stages of an irreversible process, revealing the vocation of the Faculty, particularly the major one: that of educating skilled professionals, ethical and technically prepared for a demanding job market and disputed.

The Farias Brito strode. In a short time built an educational complex in Guarulhos, increased course offerings and included research as a basis for their education. In 1982, the School is transformed into Integrated Centres for Higher Education and Farias Brito, in 1986, is recognized as the University Guarulhos.

After 40 years of hard work and effort, new circumstances and backgrounds. It was necessary to adapt to modern methods and processes. In the context of globalization, has adopted a more critical and experienced, but never stopped the guidance of its founders, especially with regard to the quality of their education.

To meet and train its 20,000 students, UnG currently has more than one thousand teachers and staff, five campuses, 108 laboratories, six clinics of the community (Nursing, Dentistry, Psychology, Speech Therapy, Nutrition and Physiotherapy), Veterinary Hospital, Clinical Laboratory, Office of Legal Assistance, Office of Architecture Model, over 50 graduate courses between conventional and technological, dozens of choices of specialized courses and MBA degrees, three master's and doctoral recommended by a CAPES / MEC.

Compromised from the moment of its foundation, with the population of the region that hosts the University Guarulhos, drawing on its human and material resources and skills acquired during its history, develops a broad policy of environmental responsibility. With its clinics and its service units specialized suits most underprivileged layers of local and regional population, providing health support services, leisure and assistance in the legal field. With its laboratories and its experts, serves the community by developing its own and in partnerships with public authorities and companies, a broad range of projects aimed at rehabilitation and preservation of the environment.

Education and Research High Quality Level

The mission of the University Guarulhos is to provide quality higher education. Their commitment is the formation of innovative and responsible citizens, equipped with the skills necessary for integration into the labor market and in terms of acting with a high level of creative performance. Fully geared to the student, his main goal is to qualify for entrepreneurship and employability, understood in its broadest sense: the acquisition of a new job, improving the existing job and ability to adapt to change in the labor market.

To fulfill its mission and be faithful to its commitment, the University is continually investing in its infrastructure in its human resources and its activities end. For the development of their courses and offering a high level of educational quality, the University has a faculty composed predominantly of teachers and doctors, integrated and committed to the institution. Your Library, computerized and managed by qualified professionals, has a collection of over 140 000 volumes and has features that allow access to virtual libraries and databases, national and international.

The laboratories and clinics are structured with updated equipment that enable students to acquire experience and practical performance in conditions close to those they will encounter in the workplace to which they are intended.

In order to continuously update and enrich their undergraduate courses and enable the delivery of continuing education courses through graduate broad and strict sense, the University Guarulhos is also characterized by heavy investment in research. Teachers with high academic and professional qualifications, hired full-time, the institution is now recognized as a pole of reference for research in many fields.

Reference is also in the area of basic scientific research, an initiative aimed at identifying young talent for research. Besides counting, because of the quality of work performed by students under faculty guidance, with grants from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), the Institutional Program for Scientific Initiation Scholarships (PIBIC) of UnG receives the input of own resources Institution, which has enabled many students to a differentiated training and adequate preparation for the continuation of their studies.

The institutional scientific production, resulting from all this investment in research and which has been disseminated through a significant volume of publications in scientific journals, national and international, also made possible the initiative to launch its own publications, which today comprises the production of four journals Electronic: Education, Geology, Health and the Third Sector.
