The University of Vale do Paraíba - Univap recognized by the Ministry of Education by order no. 510 of April 1, 1992, is a benchmark of excellence in education / training for Sao Jose dos Campos and region. His story began on January 2, 1954, after signing the Presidential Decree. 34,889 which allowed the initiation of activities of the Faculty of Law of the Paraíba Valley.

While the Law School took its first steps in Sao Jose dos Campos, standing in the legal landscape of the region and state, new industries also began to settle in the city. Despite the accelerated growth and new employment opportunities, other courses and other specialized education continued to be asked by society and especially by the industries that were established each day in greater numbers throughout the region of Sao Jose dos Campos.

Given these facts, members of Civil Society Maintainer School of Commerce in Sao Jose dos Campos, not only lent their facilities that would start the operation of the newly created Faculty of Law of the Paraíba Valley, and had the idea of creating and deploy in November 1959, the Institute Valeparaibano Education (IVE) whose goal, at first, was to provide the needs of new faculty, and then create the conditions for installation and maintenance of new schools in the city, both in higher level as secondary and primary normal, and training courses and extension, thereby aiming to offer real opportunities for the study population.

With regard to higher education, were created the following faculties: Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences of the Paraiba Valley (1961); Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters (1966), Faculty of Engineering of Sao Jose dos Campos (1967) , School of Architecture and Urbanism (1969), School of Social Service (1969).

In December 1981 the Federal Council of Education (CFE) has approved the creation of Integrated Schools in Sao Jose dos Campos, which consist of units called the Faculty of Social Sciences (with courses in Social Sciences, History, Literature and Education), Faculty of Social and Applied Sciences (with courses in Law,
Economic and Social Services) and Faculty of Exact Sciences and Technology (with courses in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Architecture).

The Univap is maintained by the Education Foundation Valeparaibano (EVP) was created on August 24, 1963, aiming to establish new courses of learning at all levels, and encourage research and scientific research for development of the region and country. The EVP is a legal entity under private law, community and nonprofit, and administratively composed of a Governing Council, Chair, Board and Board of Trustees.

The Univap is the only educational institution of the Paraíba Valley to cover all stages of the educational background of the human being, that is, from the Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Middle and Technical, followed by graduation in the modalities of Bachelors Degree and Technology, to the Postgraduate Sensu Lato in the modalities of Update, Extension and Specialisation and Post with graduate courses, in terms of Masters and PhD.

With its headquarters located in Sao Jose dos Campos, São Paulo, EVP / Univap has today, in this same city, the campus center, Urbanova and Aquarius, the city of Jacareí, Campus Villa Branca; in Caçapava The campus Caçapava and in Campos do Jordao, the campus Platanus.

The University buildings were designed with modern and functional architecture, with adequate infrastructure needs of their users and with appropriate equipment for the proper functioning of their laboratories, classrooms and auditoriums, which contribute to the teaching-learning process to take place so effective and will meet the needs of academic and scientific teachers and students and training of the regional community.

Generate, preserve and disseminate knowledge, conducting research and investigations of high quality, which are useful to man, society and the preservation of the environment they live in, as well as developing cultural, artistic and spiritual;
Develop a broad spectrum of educational programs, preparing graduates, postgraduates and professionals who are able to exercise professional competence and to participate in the development of the country and the region;
Extend, apply and share knowledge with the national community, regional and local knowledge to apply in partnership with them to address national problems, regional and local.
