The beginning of an educational

The family residence of the conductor and composer Tom Jobim, facing the street Saddock de Sa, 276, its construction was completed on December 31, 1926. With the founding of the Brazilian College de Almeida, in 1940, two-story house was modified to adapt to the increasing number of students. The first big change happened in November 1959 when the school has already belonged to the teacher Edilia Coelho Garcia. Beginning in 1962, began the construction of two blocks of interconnected buildings: a six-floor facing the avenue with Pessoa, and another four floors facing the street Saddock de Sa. The work was completed and approved by the City in August 1966 when the two new buildings began to function as an institution of learning in literacy, primary, gymnasium and science.

The floor of the building was occupied by an auditorium transformed into a theater in 1973 that still functions today. In the second block, were built a bar and a gym and underground, a carpentry workshop, ceramics and typography for the students who now have practical lessons in Industrial Design. In 1982 with the merger of the Faculty Brasileiro de Almeida, belonging to the Conductor and Composer Tom Jobim, and the Professional Joint Center, City College was born.

Seven years later, the institution was incorporated into St. Paul the Apostle School, Professor Charles Potsch, headquartered in Meier. In 1990, the Faculty of the Lagoon, a small institution that worked well in Ipanema, was annexed to the City University. Happened in 1995 was the largest of all mergers, with the incorporation of Colleges Reunidas Professor Nuno Lisboa, known for its high quality engineering courses, and worked in the districts of Madurai and Recreio.

One year after the promulgation of the Law of Directives and Bases of National Education (Law Darcy Ribeiro) in 1996, which established a new kind of institution than the university center - with the autonomy to create programs, jobs relocate and expand their areas - , the direction of then City College submitted to the Ministry of Education and the National Council of Education a project aiming at the accreditation at a university center. By decree of the president, the institution was accredited on 30 September 1998, changing its name to University Center City, and having the mark, UniverCidade.

With geographic expansion and policy fees compatible with the purchasing power of their students - made possible by agreements signed with private colleges traditional network of the municipality of Rio, which did not use fully its spaces - the UniverCidade followed its mission of also serve low-income, Class C and D, which previously had no access to higher education. Over 80% of these students work during the day and study at night, being a significant benefit from the program of scholarships partial or full, as well as FIES and ProUni.
