In the wake of MEC-USAID, military governments promoted in the years 1960 and 1970, profound changes in Brazilian higher education. Taking the U.S. model of university as a reference, and aiming to significantly expand the market for qualified young people from higher education, government policy encouraged the provision of courses and their internalization, while that amount to a successful promotion structure research and teacher training. The most visible of these reforms on the Brazilian higher education was the multiplication of colleges and universities in the country, especially the private sector and religious institutions and charities.

The Foundation is exempt from income tax as the order in Case No. 498.570/73 and Declaratory Act No 01/74 of 24/01/1974, the Federal Revenue Service in Belo Horizonte.

Currently, the Cultural Foundation Dr. Peter Leopold is the sponsor of Colleges Pedro Leopoldo (FPL), the Law Faculty of Pedro Leopoldo (FADIPEL), the Faculty of Technology of Ontario (FATEMIG) and the Technical School Management Training Theotônio Baptist Freitas, the latter in agreement with SEBRAE-MG. The Colleges Pedro Leopoldo comprises the ISE (Institute of Education) and FaCEG (Faculty of Exact Sciences and Management). The ISE has the bachelor degree in Geography, History, Literature, Mathematics and Pedagogy. The FaCEG keeps bachelors in Business Administration, Computer Science and Accounting. The FADIPEL holds a BA in Law. These courses are divided into two units, the oldest in Santo Antônio da Barra, and the newest, located on Lincoln Avenue Diogo Viana, 830, Dr. Lund (access to the Tancredo Neves International Airport). The FATEMIG keeps the courses of Technology in Logistics and Foreign Trade.

The guidelines for teaching, research and extension are defined by the collegiate bodies of Colleges, which also is responsible for developing the criteria that direct the formation of the faculty. It was the teacher training courses currently linked to the ISE that started the activities of the Cultural Foundation Dr. Peter Leopold. In 1968, on 27 November, the Foundation signed an agreement with the Mining Society of Culture, which sponsors the Catholic University of Minas Gerais. At that time, the Catholic University implanted short degree courses in various municipalities of Minas Gerais, Pedro Leopoldo so joined that list. The so-called School of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of Peter Leopold was subordinated to the Catholic University of Minas Gerais, with regard to technical and pedagogical responsibility, following the guidelines and programs that university. In February 1969, occurred the first buccal, Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of Pedro Leopoldo, offering 125 places for courses in science, literature and social studies. These courses are recognized by Decree 74006, published in the Official Gazette of May 2, 1974.

During the period 1977-1983, the Foundation has maintained, and the School, the School Dr. Christiano Ottoni, 2 ° Grau. In 1982, the first step was completed Unit Santo Antônio da Barra, so that both Foundation and the College began to have its own headquarters. In 1986, the Foundation took the decision to cut ties with the Catholic University of Minas Gerais. Thereafter, the School has given a new name: College of Humanities of Pedro Leopoldo. The new situation was sanctioned by the opinion of the Federal Council of Education January 27, 1987. Existing courses have been reworked and transformed into full degrees in Geography, History, Literature and Mathematics in accordance with Opinion 817/85 of 12.2.1986. These graduates have received full recognition in 08/11/1991, by Ordinance No. 2096, Opinion 496/91 of the Federal Council of Education. From 2000 to 2006, he ran the Superior Normal Course, approved by Decree 40699 of 11/11/1999. Starting in 2007, created the Faculty of Education, whose vestibular first occurred in 2007.

In 1994 came the first course in the management area maintained by the Foundation, which became the embryo of FaCEG. Authorisation for the first vestibular Course of Business Administration, signed by the President on December 31, 1993, allowed the formation of the first group, composed of 60 students. In 2000, he began to run the course in Computer Science, approved by Decree 40679 of 11/11/1999. In 2002, it was time to start the course in Accounting, approved by Decree 41525 of 19/01/2001.

The Faculty of Law of Peter Leopold began operations in 2004, approved by Decree s / n. of 17.12.2003, the Government of Minas Gerais. The course of law, with two entries per year to 100 students each, consolidated the work of the Foundation in the teaching field of the humanities, given strong demand locally and regionally.

The curriculum for the graduate, the activities held by the Cultural Foundation Dr. Peter Leopold began in 1996, offering two specialized courses: Methodology for Higher Education and Reading and Literature. The following year, two more post-graduation courses were offered: Human Geography and Public Administration. In 2000 already 14 specialization courses offered by the Colleges maintained by the Foundation. In 2002, participated in the post-graduate students from about 37 cities and, in states such as Sao Paulo, Bahia and Espirito Santo.
