The Faculty of Medical Sciences of Minas Gerais - FCMMG advances the strategy of combining their experience, accumulated over five decades of teaching and research, innovative approach required by the current context of education and technology in healthcare. Second oldest of Minas Gerais, School of Medicine is considered among the most prestigious in the country, which extends to excellence also pioneers in the State undergraduate courses in physiotherapy and occupational therapy, besides those related to post-graduate and distance education .
The curricula are based on a balance of theoretical and practical learning, coupled with a solid moral and ethical, social and humanistic vision - principles for students at graduate and postgraduate level. The educational model adopted (Teaching care) to ensure monitoring of the student by the teacher, through supervised internships in their own service (Affonso Silviano Brandão Clinic and University Hospital San Jose - HUSJ) or agreement with the School.
The institution runs a series of community-based programs in several areas of medical care, providing local support for the Unified Health System (SUS) in Greater Metropolitan Belo Horizonte (RMBH). In addition, its community health services and related Health Program (PSF) reach the poor in rural areas of mining towns, through the Internship Program Rural / Metro.
The FCMMG proud to educate and train doctors, physiotherapists and occupational therapists toward the future. In their successive generations, professionals trained in the School of Medicine have worked as teachers and scientists as well as physicians and surgeons in reputable hospitals in Brazil and abroad. Degree courses are well positioned in the country and reflect the institution's commitment to quality in teaching, is also positive indicators for postgraduate and distance education.
The Faculty of Medical Sciences of Minas Gerais - FCMMG is recognized among the most prestigious educational institutions in the health of the country Its history is marked by the pursuit of educational and scientific innovation, and social commitment and the high quality education. Founded in 1950 by a physician, teacher and humanist Lucas Monteiro Machado, who led the original group of 10 colleagues working at the Santa Casa de Belo Horizonte, its School of Medicine graduated its first class in December 1956. It is the second oldest in the state.
Since 1961, FCMMG deployed the undergraduate courses in physiotherapy and occupational therapy, pioneered in the State by an agreement signed with the Mining Association of Rehabilitation (formerly Foundation Arapiara). In 1969, FCMMG assumed full responsibility for the courses, recognized by decree two years later.
As an important milestone in its development, began offering FCMMG post-graduation courses in 1965, including medical residencies and specializations in various hospitals in the Capital, which enabled the training of professionals in different clinical specialties. The Center for Research and Graduate Studies - CPG was created in the mid 70's, moving gradually to reach its current structure.
The institution said in 1988 also by the deployment of post-graduate physiotherapists and occupational therapists. The 90 was very important for the consolidation of its educational model (teacher-care) to ensure monitoring of the student by the teacher. After deploying the Clinic Silviano Affonso Brandão (1988), the assumed FCMMG St. Joseph's Hospital in 1990 through an agreement with the state government (loan for use), turning it into a university hospital. Both, as insured services, provide support for the public system of primary health care in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte.
Since 1989, reaffirming its role in integrated health and education, the institution also extends its services to needy populations in Minas Gerais, through agreements Internship Rural / Metro with municipalities, targeted for public health activities and the Program Family Health - Family Health Center. The internship provides the student with the Faculty understanding of the health-disease, its determinants and constraints.
In 2005, the creation of a distance education center, the Virtual Medical Sciences - CMV intensifies the harmony of the Faculty with the current situation in education and the demands generated by new technologies, discoveries and research in the field of health. The aim is to ensure continuing education and interactive virtual environment, equipped with modern technology base, with the mark of excellence and quality achieved by FCMMG for over five decades of operation.
