Faculdade de Ciências Médicas da Santa Casa de São Paulo
São Paulo, Brazil

University description (as per official university website)

During the 1950s, the medical work at the Santa Casa of Sao Paulo took place within the normal limits of time, the activity of dedicated professionals who voluntarily attended the sick. One difference, however, began to be noticed - there were more students attending the hospital. This failure was increasingly felt by the medical staff, because without the student lost the motivation for teaching and medical work would fall into a boring routine. Subject to patient care, but injury to clinical staff, woke up in many desires of the advantage we would have in fact return the student to attend the wards and clinics, but now the cost of the Santa Casa itself create for themselves its medical school. Documents of the time recorded this initiative by the clinical staff, as indeed it can be seen in a letter sent at that time the administrative desk and are reprinted in part, dated 20/04/1956 and signed by distinguished representatives of the Medical Staff at that time:
"... The Clinical Board and the Technical Council, convinced of the urgent need to establish medical education in this Holy House, since, according to universal verification, a hospital that is not practiced in education becomes a mere deposit of patients, which is banned the lifelong learning and the rapid elucidation of clinical cases ... " sign: Paulo Godoy, Oscar Monteiro de Barros, Matheus Santamaría, Paulo de Almeida Toledo and Pedro Ayres Neto. (Minute Book No. 36, pg. 169).

Two years later, the Administrative Board approved the statutes of New College, which started its academic activities on May 24, 1963. The official recognition was granted by Federal Decree No. 62044 of 04 January 1968. The first Director of the Institution was the aforementioned Dr. Emilio Athiê (surgeon), followed by Jacob Woiski Renato Doctors (pediatrician), Adauto Barbosa Lima (clinical cardiology), Orlando Jorge Aidar (anatomist), in memoriam, Waldemar de Carvalho Pinto Son (orthopedist), in memoriam, Stanislaus Krynski (psychiatrist), in memoriam, John Fava (surgeon), and the current Director Professor Dr. Ernani Geraldo Rolim (clinical), moreover, the first alumnus of the School to reach such administrative position.

That historic day until today, the College won a lot. Although at first I was counting on the presence of staff from other institutions such as the School of Medicine, USP, Escola Paulista de Medicina, Instituto Oscar Freire, Hospital AC Camargo, Emilio Ribas Hospital, the Hospital and the Institute of Juqueri Butantã their own teachers were gradually titrating it. Many have undergone and are approved as free-teachers, others have complemented their masters and doctorates in other institutions and most were slowly and steadily in titrating the Faculty, after the creation of their various postgraduate courses. Today there are 410 teachers, of whom 270 are graduates.

Thus the creation of postgraduate courses was a great advance in the Faculty, which continues to improve its faculty.

Since 1992 began demands for the creation of other graduate programs in health and already in 1999 entered the College Undergraduate Program in Nursing in 2000 and the Undergraduate Program in Speech Pathology. In 2002 had approved his course of Graduate Health Sciences, thus extending its authority to all areas related to health and not just for medicine.

After completing his 40 years in 2004, academic activities, the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Santa Casa of Sao Paulo shows adult, having served gallantly the goals they had in mind those who envisioned and fought to get it.

In fact, she graduated 3,500 doctors, 274 teachers, 114 doctors and 26 associate professors. It is now an institution that contributes to medical science through numerous scientific research both in basic and clinical, counting some 87 research groups. It has several laboratories, such as Immunology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Physiology, Surgical Technique and Experimental Surgery and the most recent one: Molecular Biology.

Much of the scientific work carried out in it is supported by funding from the College itself, which has a Support Center for Publishing, facilitating the work of the author of Information Technology Courses and teaching resources with a network of over 200 computers, which is concentrated in provider itself. It has three rooms for video conferencing and its library is fully computerized, with programs of research literature on-line. " Were created: Core Project Support Pedagogical Core Combat Drugs, medical and psychoeducational rear for the students. In addition, all documents are scanned at the Faculty.

Important covenants are maintained by the College: the Institute of Infectious Diseases Emilio Ribas, for infectious diseases, with the State Health Department and the City, for teaching-care activities in primary health and family health program, with University of Pittsburg, intestinal and liver transplants, with the Ludwig-Maximilian University, Munich, for research in experimental surgery, with the Faculty of Medicine, University of Illinois at Chicago, in the area of Orthopedics.

So 40 years have passed and the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Santa Casa de Sao Paulo today can insert itself among the best medical schools in the country but much remains to be done, to keep on enjoying a generator of the School excellent human resources in healthcare, in the hope that maybe, after completing its 50th anniversary, the School can boast even more of everything that took place today and will continue doing.

By public instrument recorded in the April 5, 1962, the Foundation was established Arnaldo Vieira de Carvalho, with headquarters in the city of São Paulo, Rua Dr. Cesario Motta Junior, 112.
