The establishment, evolution and history of higher education in Juiz de Fora are closely linked to the Congregation of the Divine Word. Several units of the current members of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora were born of the Congregation or maintained by it, through the College of Commerce, especially the faculties of Economics, Philosophy, Sciences and Letters, School of Pharmacy and Polytechnic School.

The Vocation of the Congregation for higher education, increasing student demand for courses not available in the city and the region have long inspired the institution to create them. Finally, in March 1972 under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Leopoldo Krieger and teachers Fernando Antonio Ribeiro Rainho Tomaz, Edson Bastos Pavel, Joseph Ventura, Fr Benedict Falquetto and Lucy Maria Brandao, the initial guidelines were drawn, in order to creation of the Center for Higher Education of Juiz de Fora (CES / JF).

On 13 April the same year, the Association Propagation Esdeva presented to the Federal Council of Education's request for authorization for the operation of the IES. On August 10, 1972, by opinion No. 851/72, the Federal Council of Education approved unanimously, the project of creation of the CES / JF. On September 26, the then President of the Republic, in a decree published in the Official Gazette, authorize its operation.
By decree signed on 18 March 1975, the CES / JF had recognized undergraduate courses of short duration and pedagogy courses. On July 10, 1978, were recognized courses in psychology.

In 2010, the CES / JF has 17 courses, approved by the MEC, and postgraduate courses.


The Center for Higher Education of Juiz de Fora is based on principles of ethics and educational tradition SVD, with the task of the production and dissemination of knowledge that promotes human and professional education, guided by criteria of quality, competence and social relevance that lead the construction of a fraternal and just.


Being a university locally and regionally, recognized for excellence in their programs, services and research, characterized by innovation and joint action to promote community interaction, quality of life and the interactions between knowledge.


As an institution of higher education that seeks to fully human and professional education in the light of prophetic dialogue, has the spirit of creativity, enthusiasm and freedom of expression values that guide their actions in pursuit of an ethical awareness:

Prophetic dialogue: to talk about the future, always in search of truth, to bring the encounter with the light of the spirit.
Creativity: to innovate, build new paradigms, develop alternative technologies, to broaden horizons.
Freedom: To ensure the autonomy and the right to dialogue as a way of expressing his own being, respect for diversity.
Enthusiasm: to achieve the goals of institutional growth, excellence in service to student needs, the dialogical attitude, respect and empathy with others.
Ethical Awareness: to spread the values of the essence of education by means of SVD conduct a fair and transparent, in search of Truth.

General Purpose

Maintain academic excellence in teaching in the areas of knowledge in which it operates in order to constitute itself as a referral center for the city of Juiz de Fora and the region of its scope, developing a policy that combines several factors:

Faculty qualifications, educational projects and innovation in the methodological approaches, guidance and monitoring of students in their academic activities of teaching-research-extension, administrative staff and adequate infrastructure;
train professionals in various areas in which it operates with professional competence and social responsibility;
train professionals to contribute effectively to the development of Brazilian society on a democratic basis and for the expansion of social equality;
stimulate cultural creativity, the development of the scientific spirit and critical thinking and socially responsible;
arouse the desire for constant updating and professional development and cultural significance for the improvement and optimization of advertising professionals committed to social welfare;
encourage research work and scientific research, aiming at the development of science, technology and culture, as well as its distribution, from the understanding of the contemporary world and of man;
promotion of the cultural, scientific and technical that constitute the patrimony of humanity by communicating it through education and various publications;
promote the extension, from the knowledge of social problems by offering specialized services to the community as a result of cultural creation, scientific and technological research, establishing the company with a reciprocal relationship.
