University "Dunarea de Jos" of Galati assume the task of preparing specialists in socio-economic areas, participating actively in supporting the transmission of science and culture, helping to enrich local and national heritage of knowledge through scientific research.
University assumes the role of cultural and civic center for training and dissemination of cultural values, both scientific and social area and operating throughout the country.
As the largest and most important institution of higher education in south - eastern Romania (about 18,000 students, 15 faculties), University "Dunarea de Jos" of Galati is a flagship of technical progress, scientific, social cultural applicability immediate or medium to long term, primarily intended to help the city progress Galati.

European Centre of Excellence in Environmental Matters was founded in 1999 as the Inter-Department Environment financially supported by the Dutch government (The Matra Programme RO/97/04).
