In the case in the creation of today's Academy stand out the names of prominent policy makers and scientists, among them Konstantin Velichkov Markvichka Ivan, Ivan Shishmanov, Anton Mitov and Boris Schatz. In 1911 the teaching staff sent a draft of the development in the Ministry of Education, which present the request to the school called Academy of Arts. Ten years later, in 1921, a proposal of the Minister of National Education Stoyan Omarchevski State Drawing School was renamed the Art Academy.

Today the former is called Drawing School National Academy, which continues to be the most prestigious Bulgarian institution for training of professional artists in fine and applied arts, design, conservation and restoration and the history and theory of art (in educational qualifications " Master, Bachelor and educational and scientific degree "doctor").

In 2008-2009 school year, the tasks performed by the academic leadership are related to several key objectives. They are raising the quality and level of training of teachers, strengthening the authority of the Academy in the spiritual life in Bulgaria and its affirmation of modernity in the minds of students and the public. So the Academy is always developing and improving the direction of their specific educational and cultural activities. The quality of teaching increases, appear as new curricula, increasing the mobility of students and teachers. Aims to develop and complete realization of our Academy as one of the leading national institutions of education, creativity and culture and academic establishment as an international center for educational, artistic and cultural exchange. In NAA deals with methodological guidance in all areas of fine arts in art education system. So meet the national needs of professional artists in various fields of fine and applied arts, design, arts and restoration remains a top priority in the activities of the institution.

During the past school year NAA efforts to optimize its public image. An example is the development of obshtoakademichnata Master Digital Arts - a new step in understanding the place of NAA as an educational institution.

Significantly increased the volume of information materials issued (Annual, entrance guides, promotional brochures and special editions) and the emergence of the electronic media, and admission exchanges organized at home and abroad. The web has been completely renovated website of the Academy (, which contains detailed information about a bilingual institution and its educational goals and tasks. From this year, NAA began training on the issue of academic journal Art and Criticism ", devoted to problems of contemporary visual arts in the country and abroad.

This year the dynamics of academic life is greatly intensified due to increased resources for creative and scholarly activity. This made possible the realization of numerous creative and research tasks in each of the subjects according to their specific activities. Not accidentally the last survey faculty in 2009 showed that significantly increased the number of creative workshops and scientific conferences, the number of printed books, scientific collections, catalogs and more. never been so great. Specifics of all these activities is detailed in the edition of the Yearbook.

Project for reconstruction and modernization of NAA, Arch. Stefan Dobrev.

Along with the development of traditional educational activities the main objective of the current leadership continue to be associated with the project for reconstruction and modernization of the NAA. It now provides to the existing building (cultural) to add new, to unite and expand learning spaces for all students. Provided funding for project activities. In November 2008 (on the basis of a competition in 2005) by architect Stefan Dobrev signed a contract for the design. The preliminary draft was discussed and adopted the Academic Board in June 2009 in Academy Gallery was an exhibition that opens to the general public cultural his most recent previews. In connection with the projects within the NAA (Shipka "№ 1) was pre-archaeological study of archaeologists NAIM-BAS. So far not found precious historical monuments, but the next stage is not excluded that this can happen. Academic community is convinced that the benefits of implementation of this project will far exceed the very specific needs of the educational institution. Because the project for the new building, along with spacious studios and exhibition provided lecture halls that will work in favor of the overall cultural life in the capital. And because for the first time over the Hundred Years' museum collection of the National Academy of Arts will have its own repository and exhibition area.

Optimism in the institutional development of the NAA is the result not only of new or improved curricula. It is a symbiosis of the number and content of ongoing academic research projects, workshops and conferences, exhibitions and lectures.
