University description (as per official university website)

University of Tromsø is a driving force in the region's development. When the campus was established in 1968, it was described as a distriktispolitisk experiment. The experiment was - and is - a success. UiT has become one of the key educational and research institutions in Norway.

There was no shortage warning voices against establishing a university in northern Norway. It was predicted that
slight tuning of researchers and students that neither would hold a professional sound level or achieve an acceptable size. When parliament defied opposition was to achieve greater geographical equality and justice between Northern Norway and the rest of the country. The goal was to give the North Norwegian youth improve educational opportunities and ensure the recruitment of professionals to the region.

Some important milestones in our history:

1918:
Hans A. Meyer, politician and business man from Mo i Rana, introduces the idea of a university in Tromso.
1962:
University of Tromsø is on the political agenda.
1967:
The Government proposes to establish a university in Tromso.
1968:
Parliament decides to create a university in Tromso.
1969:
University of Tromsø gets a interimstyre. Chairman is Peter F. Hjort.
1972:
King Olav V opens the University of Tromsø in Tromsø Cathedral, and the first students and teachers take seats in the leased premises.
Fishery program established
1973:
Professional Program in Medicine established
1978:
The first permanent building on campus in Breivika is finished. The plot is 1500 goal. Over the next 10 years raised barley for barley, and students will be offered new trials, for example. law in 1985.
1987:
Professional Program in Law established
Engineering Program established
1988:
Norwegian College of Fishery Science (founded in 1972) is a permanent scientific institution of the University of Tromsø.
1989:

1991:
Medicine and Health Sciences building is completed, the Regional Hospital of Tromsø (Rito, now the University Hospital of North Norway, UNN), Northern Europe's most modern University Hospital, are used.
Professional Program in Psychology established
1993:
25th anniversary of the parliamentary decision on the establishment of the nation's fourth university, located in Tromso. Department of Arctic Biology move into new buildings in Breivika.
1994:
During the summer, a separate building for the Norwegian College of Fishery Science was ready to move.
Master of Pharmacy established
1997:
University introduces faculty structure.
2004:
Professional Program in Dentistry established
2005:
King Harald V opened Teorifagbygget.
2006:
University to resume discussions with the University of Tromsø on the merger.
2007:
College Board and College Board approves unanimously to seek the Ministry to be merged from 1.1.2009. Government approves merger 26 September 2008.
2008:
University of Tromsø, marks 40 years since the parliamentary decision.
2009:
University of Tromsø will be merged with University College in Tromsø under the name of the University of Tromsø.
