The University of Art and Industrial Design Linz (Linz University of Art)

has its institutional and programmatic roots in art school in 1947, founded the city of Linz, which was founded in 1973 and 1998, finally brought to college to university. The foundation was an expression of conscious cultural and political boundaries to the previous Nazi period. Of this particular witness the emphasis on the fundamental values of freedom of art and research, a commitment to artistic modernity and to contemporary art, and the positioning of the new facility in the battle between free and applied art, business-oriented design. These values are still the basis for the fundamental identity of the Art University Linz.
Since 1 January 2004, the university under the new University Act of 2002, a "legal person of public law" and thus largely independent.

In the context of regional and international environment in which moves the Art University Linz, in recent years, three pillars have been developed, which are the levels of specialized skills beyond artistic for the development, research and teaching of particular importance. You bear the unmistakable profile of the university:


This term refers to focus on those artistic, scientific, and all types of knowledge relevant potentials, which are created in the media or in dealing with them. Within universities means Intermedia one hand, the provision of wider media literacy in all disciplines, on the other hand the development of an internationally positioned at the forefront of research, education and information center for art, science and business. In the art university cooperates closely with other regional and international bodies, especially with the Ars Electronica Center.


On the basis of excellent specialized training in these programs, the Art University Linz devoted primarily to the interfaces between the fields of architecture, design, urban and regional planning, ecology, and media attention. Here are mediated by means of specific artistic and scientific research projects and interdisciplinary cross-cutting skills in relevant subjects, which the students to enable greater visibility and flexibility.

Artistic and Scientific Research

It is one of the key functions of university education, especially the Art University Linz artistic practice and scientific research, application forms and free orientation under one roof are just starting. The tension between science and art required in methodological terms as well as issues of knowledge and the mediation after intensive research and development of the arts in a process. Cultural studies and art theory, media theory, media strategies and gender studies in the context of concrete art production are essential components of the profile of Art University.


The College of Art and Design has emerged from the 1947 founded "Art of the City of Linz. The school covers areas on the main square in the western Brückenkopfbau 8th In later years, there are annexes in the Bishop Street and the Prunerstraße. It has two master classes for painting, led by Herbert Dimmel and Karl Hauk, which acts as a director until 1949, as well as a Master School for Graphic, led by Dr. Alfons Ortner.

Takeover of the Directorate by Dr. Alfons Ortner. Ortner aims at the convergence of art at a type of Academy of Applied Arts.

The Art of Linz in 1961 replaced the open-ended public law by the Federal Ministry of Education, the school statute and studies, education and examination to be revised instead of "school master", the term "Master" is introduced. It will be built following new master:
Commercial art, led by Eric Buchegger
General Basic class, led by Dr. Roxane Cuvay.

Through the Federal Law of 9 May 1973, BGBl No 251/1973, the "College of Arts and Industrial Design in Linz will be built."

Establishment of a chair for work education, and appointment of O. HPROF. Helmut Huber for their management or establishment of a chair for Textile Design Works and Appointment of O. HPROF. Fritz Riedl for their management.

The "Fund of the University of Applied Sciences Linz" organized in the fall of 1977 the exhibition "Forum Metal Linz" (concept, organization and artistic director Helmuth Gsöllpointner and Peter Baum).
In the summer of 1980, the University Fund, in collaboration with the Neue Galerie der Stadt Linz and others, the exhibition "Forum Design - Design shapes the everyday life" (concept Helmuth Gsöllpointner, Angela Hareiter, Laurids Ortner and Peter Baum).

Beginning of the new building remodeling university bzw.des the former ring bread works in Urfahr, Sonnensteinstraße / Reindlstrasse.
The Chair of Design and Technology, the master of sculpture and visual design as well as those for the ceramic cover for 1986 in the renovated building. 1990 is the relocation of the master classes for painting and graphic art, visual media design, metal, textile design, the chair of Umraumgestaltung, the central media workshop, printing, screen printing workshop, the Students Union and parts of the administration in the new building Urfahr.

10.01.1998 With the new Federal Act on the Organisation of Universities of the Arts (KUOG) in force. From that date to pay the university the title of "University of Art and Industrial Design in Linz. 27/09/2000 With all the organs of Art University in accordance with the provisions of the 1998 KUOG are selected. On 09.28.2000 the UFG Linz enters the KUOG 1998.

For the first rector under the provisions of KUOG 98 on 05/04/2000 Univ.Prof.Dr. Reinhard Kannonier elected.

Establishment of the forum - friends and alumni of the Art University Linz; creation of the International Research Laboratory Design-Organisation-Media (DOM) (Director: Arch.Dipl.-Ing. Shamiyeh Michael)

To re-Univ.Prof.Dr. Reinhard Kannonier as Director for a further period of four years. At the suggestion of Univ.Prof.Dr. Reinhard Kannonier determined by the University three vice-rectors.
The Göße of the Senate at the Art University Linz is the founding convention of 12 members set out with.

Since 1 January 2004, the university under the new University Act of 2002, a "legal person of public law" and thus largely independent.

After nine months of (re) construction, the facilities listed in the former main post office ready for occupancy and the Institute of Fine Arts and Cultural moved from the Peter-Behrens-house to the new site at the College's second alley
This location now houses studios, workshops, office and social rooms and the courtyard of the building in the newly built auditorium, including cafeteria and 200m2 roof terrace.
