University description (as per official university website)
CQUniversity is one of the most engaged, supportive and responsive universities in Australia. We're focused on making higher education and research more accessible and relevant to all people, especially those who live and work in our region and beyond. Although a relatively young university, we're undertaking world-class research in the areas of health, natural resources and education. We have also been one of the most successful Australian universities in attracting and servicing international students.
In the beginning
Commencing operations in 1967, as the Queensland Institute of Technology (Capricornia), we gained full university status in 1992 (as the University of Central Queensland), changing our name to CQUniversity Australia in 2008. Today, we operate from six locations in Central Queensland with campuses in Rockhampton, Gladstone, Mackay, and Bundaberg and learning sites at Emerald and Noosa - covering an area three-to-four times the size of Victoria.
We were among the first Australian universities to provide distance education, pioneering flexible, mixed-mode study, diminishing the distinctions between full-time and part-time and on-campus and off-campus study. It's one of the many reasons why school-leavers and working professionals from Central Queensland, and elsewhere, choose to study with us. We can accommodate their lifestyle by allowing them to study at times and places, which best suit them.
We were also innovative in our approach to providing education for international students, opening our first international campus in Sydney in 1994. This bold move of operating in another state, dramatically changed the face of Australian higher education and CQUniversity is now recognised as a major provider of education to international students now with additional campuses in Melbourne, Brisbane and on the Gold Coast.
Access and support
Our cornerstones are access and support. For more than 20 years, we have made university possible for thousands of people who want to study but who may not have had the pre-requisite knowledge, skills or confidence to start a degree. CQUniversity offers five special access programs that help students of all ages and circumstances prepare for university.
Work Integrated Learning
We are currently developing new programs in law and medical imaging that will have a direct impact on the well being of our communities. We are also expanding traditional study areas such as health and human performance, nursing, social work, environmental sciences, education, engineering, built environment and information technology.
Our vision is to become one of Australia's truly great universities through extensive engagement with community, industry and government. We are working towards this by supporting our students along their entire learning journey and reaching out to communities and industry to ensure that we help meet their needs both now and in the future.
