Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary
Berkeley, United States- California

University description (as per official university website)

Our approach to theological education is unique among the seminaries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). We were founded to prepare leaders for Godís people in diverse and changing contexts. These contexts used to be particular to the West. Not anymore.

Our approach has never been more relevant; our resources never stronger. Our philosophy, location, and membership in the GTU and the Western Mission Cluster ensure students a theological education for todayís world.

Our Mission

* Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary develops leaders for the church by: deepening faith in Christ; challenging the mind; expanding the heart; and energizing for mission.

* PLTS was founded in 1950

* Berkeley, California
* Only Lutheran seminary in the western half of the United States
* Covering 13 states, our territory of service includes nearly two-thirds of the country

The Graduate Theological Union (GTU)

* Consortium of nine seminaries and nine research centers in partnership with the University of California, Berkley
* Our students enjoy cross registration privileges at other GTU schools and at the University of California, Berkeley.
* We are an active member of the common GTU M.A. and Ph.D. programs
* The GTU offers concentrations in 13 areas of study: Art and Religion, Biblical Studies, Christian Spirituality, Cultural and Historical Studies of Religions, Ethics and Social Theory, History, Homiletics, Interdisciplinary Studies, Jewish Studies, Liturgical Studies, Near Eastern Religions, Religion and Psychology, Systematic and Philosophical Theology

Financial Aid

The primary purpose of the seminaryís financial aid program is to assist qualified women and men in obtaining a theological education at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary. The seminaryís financial aid program is designed to augment the studentís efforts. Students are responsible for their educational and living expenses and for seeking financial aid.

Aid is awarded on the basis of need, availability of funds and satisfactory academic progress. Aid sources include government guaranteed loans, government-funded employment, PLTS-funded employment and PLTS Grant in Aid and scholarships.

Most synods and districts and some congregations offer grants and/or loans for theological education. Students should apply for such grants and/or loans directly to the respective agencies. Students are also encouraged to seek assistance from civic organizations, trust funds and foundations. Information on such scholarship may be sought through the Financial Aid section of the GTU web site.

All students are encouraged to apply for financial aid. PLTS does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, religious affiliation, age, gender or disability in administering its financial aid programs.
