Texas Southmost College
Brownsville, United States - Texas

University description (as per official university website)

History

Texas Southmost College (TSC) was the first institution of higher education in the region.

Established in 1926, it operated first as the Junior College of the Lower Rio Grande Valley and became the first accredited public junior college in Texas. In 1948, the junior college moved to Fort Brown, a decommissioned Army installation adjacent to the downtown business district and one block from the Rio Grande.

In 1973, Pan American University in Edinburg agreed to staff an extension center on the TSC campus to provide upper-level and graduate coursework for students in the Brownsville area. While this arrangement provided additional career opportunities for students, the number of majors was limited, as was the range of services provided.

By 1991, the upper-level center was serving about 1,500 students with a full-time faculty of 33 professors. In order to expand opportunities at the university level for an area that was clearly underserved, the Texas Legislature separated the branch campus from The University of Texas- Pan American and established a new autonomous university named The University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB). Concurrently, the Legislature passed legislation permitting UTB and TSC to enter into a partnership that provides a seamless transition for students as they pursue degrees at the one- and two-year, four-year and graduate levels.

UTB/TSC, which has achieved considerable growth since the inception of the partnership, is truly a community university. Its campus has grown to more than 460 acres. It employs more than 375 full-time faculty members and has more than 17,000 students. The university, which receives nearly $6 million in research funding each year, has more than 150 undergraduate programs (certificates and associate and bachelor’s degrees) and 23 graduate programs, including a Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction.

In addition to its many first-rate educational programs, UTB/TSC is the proud home of the Center for Biomedical Studies, the Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy and the Rancho del Cielo Field Station.

Admissions

Anyone meeting one of the following conditions may be admitted by:

High School Graduation. A copy of the official high school transcript showing the date of graduation must be submitted to the Office of Admissions prior to registration.

Examination. Applicants who did not graduate from high school may be admitted by successfully completing the General Education Development Testing Program (G.E.D.). A copy of the Certificate of High School Equivalency with test scores must be submitted to the Office of Admissions prior to registration.

Individual Approval. People who do not qualify for admission under either of the above conditions may be admitted if they are at least 18 years of age. Applicants must submit two letters of reference using the forms provided by the Office of Admissions. People admitted under "individual approval" will be under academic probation for the initial enrollment period (term).

Transfer from Another College. Students who have attended other colleges must submit official transcripts from each institution prior to registration. Veterans applying for benefits must provide a transcript since credit for previous education must be verified.

Fresh Start. An applicant for admission may seek to enter this institution pursuant to the state’s "academic fresh start" statute, Texas Education Code, §51.931. If the applicant informs the Office of Admissions in writing of his or her election under the statute, the institution will not consider academic course credits or grades earned by the applicant 10 or more years prior to the starting date of the semester in which the applicant seeks to enroll. An applicant who makes the election to apply under this statute may not receive any course credits for courses taken 10 or more years prior to enrollment. An applicant who has earned a baccalaureate degree under the "academic fresh start" statute, Texas Education Code, §51.927, will be evaluated on the grade point average of the course of work completed after enrollment under "fresh start" and the other criteria stated herein.

Financial Aid

Scholarships at The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College are made available each semester to students through the generous donations of corporations, businesses, community organizations, individual donors, and the university itself. These funds are intended to open doors for students to achieve their academic goals, while relieving some of the financial costs of higher education. UTB/TSC gratefully acknowledges the generous donations of individual donors and organizations who make these scholarships possible.
