University description (as per official university website)
The city is our campus, providing students with exceptional opportunities for internships, employment and entertainment. Just steps from campus you’ll discover everything and everyone that makes KC special – great food, concerts, plays, galleries and museums, shopping, sports teams and nightlife.
With 124 academic programs in 12 schools, UMKC is bound to have the one thing (or more than one thing) you’ll want to continue learning about. Maybe you already know what you want to study; maybe you don’t. Either way, UMKC is a great place to explore your potential, putting different classes together to define what you learn and who you will become.
Campus Life
Of course Kansas City provides fun opportunities, but you don’t even need to leave campus to have a good time. Whatever you enjoy doing outside of the classroom, you’ll find it at UMKC.
With 300 organizations on campus, extracurricular activities play an integral part of student life at UMKC. Whether it’s politics, history, the arts or … you name it, UMKC is bound to have a club or organization filled with future friends wanting to do the same thing. And if nothing else, we’ll provide you the resources to do your own thing!
If sports are your scene, UMKC offers 16 NCAA Division I sports. Whether you’re playing, watching or cheering, there are plenty of athletic events to keep your schedule full.
Diversity
One of the most common reasons students say they are interested in and chose UMKC is because of its diversity; students think this is one of the benefits of attending UMKC and understand what a rich experience they will have here. With offices, such as Multicultural Student Affairs, the Women’s Center and International Student Affairs, students will get the support they need and find social and educational programming to enhance their experiences.
UMKC also has chapters of the following fraternities and sororities: Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Phi Beta Sigma, Delta Sigma Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and Missouri’s first Latino Fraternity, Lambda Theta Phi.
UMKC is Kansas City’s best school for meeting a diverse mix of people from across the country and world. More than 20 percent of our students are students of color and another 6 percent are international students from more than 68 foreign countries, giving it the most diverse and international student body of all the University of Missouri schools.
Our students embrace diversity in and out of the classroom and in the surrounding community. Whether it’s through student life events, living in a residence hall or classroom interaction, from day one, you’ll start making friends that will last a lifetime.
Affordability
A total of $150 million in financial aid is awarded each year at UMKC, with more than three-quarters of UMKC students benefiting. The University also has scholarships ranging from $250 to full paid expenses per year for students who exhibit superior academic or leadership skills.
