Kirkwood Community College was established in 1966. It was named after Samuel J. Kirkwood, U.S. Senator and Iowa governor in the late 19th century. In addition to its main campus east of Kirkwood Boulevard, Kirkwood Community College also has learning centers in Williamsburg, Iowa City, Tipton, Marion, Washington, Vinton, Belle Plaine, and Monticello.
