The Des Moines Area Community College, also known as DMACC, is a community college in Iowa, United States. It was officially founded on March 18, 1966, and was designated as Merged Area XI. The campus is spread across an area of 6,560 square miles. DMACC is known for its programs in computing, nursing, and vocational training.
The college offers a wide variety of degrees and programs in diverse areas of study. DMACC is home to many clubs and organizations that assist in the overall development of students. Some of the clubs are the American Sign Language Club, Phi Theta Kappa, Environmental Conservation Club, and Medical Assistant.
DMACC’s student body has an impressive number of international students. The college's ISCAC (International) club provides various facilities and services to foreign students. The students also participate in various sports. The athletic teams are nicknamed the Bears.
College History Des Moines Area Community College is a publicly supported two-year institution serving the Des Moines metropolitan area and surrounding counties. The College District includes all or major portions of Audubon, Boone, Carroll, Dallas, Guthrie, Jasper, Madison, Marion, Polk, Story and Warren counties and minor parts of 11 adjacent counties. It encompasses 6,560 square miles or about 11 percent of the land area of the state. Approximately 20 percent of the state's population resides within the district. It operates in the same geographical boundaries as Heartland Area Education Agency 11.
Des Moines Area Community College was officially created March 18, 1966, and was designated as Merged Area XI. A nine member Board of Directors was elected and formally installed that same year.
The College was established after extensive studies had indicated the need for such an institution. Leading figures throughout the College's District combined their talents and resources to assure proper planning for the College.
