Buena Vista College (now Buena Vista University) was founded by the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1891.
Students:
968 full-time students were enrolled on the Storm Lake campus for the 2008 fall semester.
1,408 students were enrolled at the 14 locations of BVU Professional and Online Studies, which has graduated more than 11,000 students since it started 32 years ago.
102 students were enrolled in graduate programs.

Admissions Requirements for International Students at Buena Vista University:
The United States system of education requires graduation from a secondary school in order to gain admission to a college or university. Additionally, to be considered for admission to Buena Vista University, you must submit the following:
- International Application for Admission.
- Official records with English translations from every academic institution attended beginning with the first year of secondary school. Records must include date of entry, date of completion/termination and the name of certificate/diploma received. You are encouraged to include records related to other activities you participated in during your education.
- An English proficiency report to be verified by the results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). TOEFL information can be located at www.toefl.org. (Buena Vista University code is #6047).
RECOMMENDED SCORE: 550 PBT/213 CBT/79 iBT
MINIMUM REQUIRED SCORE: 475 PBT/152 CBT/50 iBT
(Equivalent score from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is acceptable.)
In order to ensure proper placement, all incoming international students are required to complete an ESL diagnostic during International Student Orientation. Students may be placed in ESL classes if the instructor determines it is necessary.
- A personal statement providing background on your educational experience thus far and your educational and professional plans for your future.
- A minimum of two Letters of Reference/Recommendation to be sent directly to Buena Vista University from the principal(s) or instructor(s) who can lend insight regarding rank in class and comparison with classmates. Each letter should also indicate the length of time the writer has known the student.
