| Scholarships or student grants program description |
This scholarship is offered to a freshman whose major is one of the pre-healing arts, earned 1000 or greater SAT score, and who graduated in the top 1/5 of his/her high school class. This award will be renewed for a maximum of four years as long as the recipient maintains a 3.5 or greater QPA and remains enrolled full-time in a pre-healing arts curriculum. Financial need is not a factor.
At the present time there are 15 full-time faculty members in the Biology and Health Services Department who provide students the opportunity to work with specialists in a variety of biological areas. This also permits small classes to be conducted with the instructor in a personalized manner. All of the Department faculty members have terminal degrees in their area of expertise and are active in research. In addition, many of the faculty have post-doctoral research experience. However, each member is selected and evaluated primarily on the basis of his ability to teach and work with students.
The department is equipped with facilities for both undergraduate and graduate programs in biology. There are nine teaching labs, as well as a number of research and independent study labs. The facilities include a greenhouse, museum, herbarium, a computer facility, and molecular biology and aquatic research laboratories. There is also an opportunity during the summer for students to attend terrestrial and freshwater ecology classes at the Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology, Linesville, Pennsylvania through a consortial agreement between Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pittsburgh.
