Scholarships or student grants program description

This fund was established in 2007 to support one or more scholarships for graduating high school seniors who are children of active police officers or firefighters serving in the City of Reading or who are children of retired or deceased police officers or firefighters who served in the city of Reading, and who plan to continue their education after high school at a vocational-technical school or at a two- or four-year college, university or trade school. Preference will be given to children of active police officers or firefighters.

The recipients will be good citizens in their school and in their community and receive above-average grades in school, as evidenced by a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Along with the application, applicants are required to write and submit an essay which explains, "How did your parent's job as a police officer or firefighter influence your life and/or your career decision?"

Scholarship applications for the 2009-2010 school year will not be accepted until after January 15, 2009, with the exceptions of the Marie Bossler Phi Delta Kappa Scholarship Fund application, which may be submitted now through February 1, 2009, and the Hispanic Center Scholarship, which may be submitted beginning January 1, 2009.
Berks County Community Foundation administers scholarship and award funds for Berks County students. These funds often carry the name of the donor, school district, or field of education that the scholarship or award serves.
