Applicants should have a subject background in Medicine, Microbiology, Engineering, Physics. Experience in a biological science would be desirable.
*
Applications are open to new PhD students from all Universities who wish to study Full-Time.
Further information:
This is an interdisciplinary studentship which builds on the successful collaboration between Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, School of Medicine (Professor Dietrich Mack) and the School of Physical Sciences (Professor Helmut Telle) within the Centre of NanoHealth and incorporating the fluorescent imaging experience of Dr Thomas Wilkinson (Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease).
The successful applicant will address the rapid species identification of microorganisms in clinical specimens using Raman spectroscopy and further aim to explore the application of Raman spectroscopy to rapid antibiotic susceptibility testing, a vital area in clinical microbiology in face of growing problems with antibiotic resistance. The project involves application of basic science methodology to a clinical problem of major importance with great translational prospects in an outstanding interdisciplinary collaboration fostered by the Institute of Life Science and the Centre of NanoHealth.
This project will be supervised by Dr Thomas S Wilkinson, Lecturer (Medical Microbiology) and co-supervised Professor Helmut H Telle (Department of Physics).
About the Studentship:
The full research studentship includes the Home/EU tuition fees and a maintenance allowance of £13,290 (for 2009/10) per annum.
How to Apply:
Please submit a CV, including research experience to date, scientific interests and at least two references.
