Scholarships or student grants program description

The School of Materials is inviting applications for a distinguished PhD studentship sponsored by Novelis.

During commercial thermomechanical processing of aluminium alloys, the surface and near-surface regions of alloy sheet are subjected to enhanced shear strain; consequently, the conventional microstructures are transferred into ultrafine grained structures. Such structures have a significant influence on material performance, with various properties affected, including the electrochemical and corrosion behaviour as well the joining and welding behaviour, and the optical properties.

This research programme aims to provide scientific understanding of the evolution of the near-surface layers on 3xxx aluminium alloy, to assess their influence on the corrosion behaviour, and to find effective surface treatments to increase corrosion resistance. The near-surface deformed layer will be characterised by using scanning and transmission electron microscopies combined with innovative specimen preparation techniques. The relationship between the thermomechanical processing parameters and the microstructure of the near-surface deformed layer will be investigated. The chemistry of the near-surface deformed layer will be studied by using spatially resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). The assessment of corrosion susceptibility will be based on the accelerated laboratory corrosion testing and electrochemical measurement.

The PhD student will be based at the Corrosion and Protection Centre, the School of Materials and will work with collaborators at Novelis. The School of Materials has achieved ratings of 5* in the Research Assessment Exercises in 1996 and 2001, placing it at the highest level of academic achievement. Novelis is a leading global materials company with world-class technology and operations in aluminum fabrication. This PhD program provides a unique opportunity to combine pioneering academic research with industrial experience. The successful completion of this PhD will open the door to numerous career opportunities in the aluminium industry as well as aerospace and automotive industries.
