| Scholarships or student grants program description |
The project will examine the experiences of work and skill in one or more sectors, focusing on the divergent interests between employers and employees, the fracturing of self, self-identity and notions of skill and the pressures placed on employee peer relations. In-depth qualitative and ethnographic studies offer particularly powerful insights to such emergent, ambiguous and hidden aspects of the workplace and the research is likely to draw extensively on such an approach. The student will work under the supervision of Professor Rick Delbridge and colleagues from SKOPE and CORGies.
What is SKOPE'
SKOPE is an inter-disciplinary ESRC research centre, based at the universities of Cardiff and Oxford, and its work focuses on the relationship between skills (broadly defined) and performance (at a number of levels). Its current five-year research programme covers issues to do with the simultaneous growth of top and bottom end jobs, the spatial distribution of skills and knowledge and the emergence of ‘smart’ education and training system across the developed world.
What is CORGies'
CORGies is a group of leading researchers based at Cardiff Business School who share a common interest in developing critical organization research. A core objective of the CORGies group is to provide PhD students with a supportive environment for effective study, research and personal development. The members have a strong research programme in a range of broad and overlapping areas including Critical Management Studies, Organizational Cultures and Sub-Cultures; Identities and Discourse; Institutional Perspectives on Organization, Innovation and Work; New Organizational Forms and the Nature of Work; and Organizational Change in the Public Sector.
The Doctoral Programme at Cardiff provides a high calibre study environment which is recognized by the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Successful applicants will benefit in the following ways:
· Active and inclusive research community committed to supporting the PhD Programme, PhD students, and subject area
· Personal supervision from leading international scholars
Cardiff Business School was ranked 4th out of 90 UK business schools in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, and ‘excellent’ for teaching. Lively, elegant, confident and cosmopolitan, the city of Cardiff offers an excellent location in which to study. Students benefit from the combination of a small, friendly, inexpensive city with the cultural and recreational amenities of an ambitious and progressive capital city.
The studentship is available for three years full-time, and includes fees and a stipend of £13,290 per year tax free.
